Ajman, Dec 2: Padma Bhushan Dr Ramakanta Panda, vice-chairman and internationally renowned cardio vascular thoracic surgeon at the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, India had called on the students of Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, UAE recently.
He was invited by the Gulf Medical University to deliver the inaugural lecture as part of the newly-introduced ‘Heroes of Healthcare Lecture Series.’ He delivered a speech on ‘Recent Trends in Cardiac Surgery.’ While interacting he emphasized on the students to dream big and aim higher to succeed in their noble profession. He also added that passion and dedication is a must to succeed.
‘Heroes of Healthcare’ is an international lecture series organized by the Gulf Medical University, Ajman wherein internationally renowned experts are invited to deliver talks and interact with the faculty and students at the University.
Dr Ramakanta Panda on his maiden visit to the University was highly impressed with the latest facilities and services being offered to the students by the institution. He said the campus and facilities are on par with reputed international institutions in the West. “I wish such colleges are set up in many places, especially in India,” he added.
During his discussions with the president of the University, Dr Ramakanta Panda proposed joint activities and suggested that an international conference on cardiology be held in February 2011. He said that there is a tremendous need for mutual cooperation between the two institutions.
Complimenting the unique initiatives of GMU, Dr Ramakanta Panda said that the Asian Heart Institute would be keen to train some of the students in cardiac surgery and be part of the team to set up cardiac centre at GMC Hospital, Ajman.
GMU president Thumbay Moideen said that it was a honour to have Dr Ramakanta Panda of international repute at the University. Further, he added, “We are keen to work in close relationship with the prestigious Asian Heart Institute on mutually beneficial long term basis’. He honoured Dr Ramakanta Panda by presenting him a specially designed memento on the auspicious occasion.
Later, Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman had an audience with Dr Ramakanta Panda and the president of GMU.
Dr Peter K Morley, medical director-international, Bumrungrad International, Bangkok, Thailand and Dr Hermann Reichenspurner, M D, PhD, professor and chairman, Center for Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, University of Hamburg, Germany have been invited to participate in the next ‘Heroes in Healthcare Series’ at the Gulf Medical University.
