In the writings of Mahatma Gandhi, one comes across the following: "Saint Francis Xavier passionately prayed that his mind might always remain pure. 'Then why O blessed Jesus Christ, shall I not love thee well ? Not for the sake of winning heaven, or of escaping hell, not with the hope of seeking reward, but as Thyself has loved me, O everlasting Lord'-wrote Francis Xavier. Devotion to God was not for enjoying a higher seat after death. He prayed because it was man's duty to pray, wrote the Mahatma.
