Bengaluru, Dec 30: Media and politicians need one another and both cannot survive otherwise, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Speaking after launching the new tabloid English daily, News Trail, he said the media faces many challenges especially with the popularity of the social media which is trail blazing the electronic media and therefore the media needs to develop new strategies to successfully face the challenges by taking risks.

However, the Chief Minister said the print media still enjoys higher credibility because people would read the newspapers to confirm what they have read in the social media or seen in the electronic media, particularly to understand the nuances and significance of any developments.

The media needs to be truthful, factual and interesting so as to gain new readership and retain existing readers, which is a herculean task. Newspapers need to present news and articles in such a way as to create and cultivate new readers rather than chase existing readers, he said.

Former Chief Minister and Congress Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad, Dr Sudarshan Ballal and others attended the function. Nina Gopal, Editor, welcomed.

Media don’t need politicians but it is other way round. Majority of media in India are controlled by BJP politicians either by threat or by other means. Reporters are threatened or beaten up by goons. Even CJI made a statement yesterday how media should report the truth forgetting ideology or state pressures. This guy is giving them veiled threat like he has done since becoming CM.

Truth is Media can survive without politicians, if Government does not harass them. It is only politicians who need media for their furthering their political propaganda. And by stating that Media need politicians to survive, he is indirectly telling the media to fall in line with the politics of the ruling party, else they will misuse their official machinery to harass the media through raids , not giving Government ads etc..... Most of the media today is dependent on Govt. ads and due to this dependency have become stooges of political party and objectivity in news reporting is lost. Agree with the statement that "THE MEDIA NEEDS TO BE TRUTHFUL, FACTUAL AND INTERESTING SO AS TO GAIN NEW READERSHIP AND RETAIN EXISTING READERS, WHICH IS A HERCULEAN TASK NEWSPAPERS NEED TO PRESENT NEWS AND ARTICLES IN SUCH A WAY AS TO CREATE AND CULTIVATE NEW READERS RATHER THAN CHASE EXISTING READERS", but before preaching this to the media let him practice that with his MLAs to be truthful, factual and interesting, so as to gain new voters and retain existing ones............................
