Udupi: Hijab controversy – MLA Raghupati Bhat justifies college’s stand, clarifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Jan 2: Restricting Muslim girl students from entering the class for wearing Hijab has created much uproar in the district. Six students of government girls PU college had earlier alleged that the principal of the college had restricted them from entering the classroom for wearing Hijab. The issue was brought out by media on December 31.

Many political parties including Congress raised their voices against the discrimination, criticized the principal's decision and demanded to allow the students to enter the classroom.

A meeting was held between the student leaders of Islamic organizations and Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat on Saturday January 1.

In the meeting, the MLA clarified that the students were allowed to wear Hijab in the college campus from the beginning. But it was not permitted inside the class. “If we allow this today, we might encounter various other sort of demands from other students as well and this will be a cause of concern,” he said.

The students countered that other government colleges and private colleges allowed wearing Hijab even inside the class.

Representative of Campus Front of India in a press conference claimed that the college is practicing religious discrimination. They also warned of violent protests if it is not stopped.

The issue has been very challenging for both the parties to resolve. If it is not resolved immediately in a peaceful manner, it will have a negative impact on the studies of other students of the college and harmony of the district.

Many people are drawing false equivalence between sikh turban and hijab. Its stupid. Teachers should be able to recognise students when they teach in class. How will professors recognise their students if they are covering faces with hijab? Many European countries have banned hijabs in government buildings and educational institutes. If muslims still want to wear hijabs then they should join some sharia ruled colleges or madrassas. Dont force a public college to abide as per your sharia norms

There is a reason behind having uniform during education viz., the sense of equality. We are a liberal country. That does not mean that conservatism of religion should be allowed to creep into Schools and colleges. Want to wear Hijab, then you make a choice, viz., you want to be educated or stay illiterate. That is anyway what the Taliban is prescribing to their women. What next? namaz time during college hours; segregation of male and female students; female teachers for female students; I am sure the list can go on. This nonsense should be nipped at the bud.

Albert, So you mean to say a piece of scarf promotes terrorism. May god forgive you for your hatred. U are equating a little kids piece of cloth to terrorism. Wow. By the way ask your cheddi brothers, they still call our sikh farmers as terrorists and khalistanis. Shettre get your facts rights. They are banning the hijab which is a scarf. Not a face cover. No kid in that school covered their face. Only the head with respect to their religious belief. Just like the sikh kids do. Eat your words and call ur self foolish for not knowing what your talking. By the way I agree that face cover shouldnt be allowed. But isnt mask mandatory or atleast it was till few weeks back?. Face cover also covers as much as the mask does. However as i said any form of face cover shdnt be allowed in the interest of the students except the masks.

Because sikhs dont cover their faces. Comparing hijabs to turbans is foolish. Teachers should be able to recognise you when they are teaching in classrooms. How do you expect them to teach if students are covering their faces with hijabs, burqas etc? Many european countries have already banned hijabs in government offices and educational institutes. Hijab is a security threat.

Ajay he is elected representative of that area, he gas every right to be in that meeting. But what your CFI was doing there I cannot understand, 30 years ago before the mass migration of these keralites nobody used to wear hijab in south kanara and it was a peaceful district.

South Kanara was peaceful and will be peaceful and it is not the presence or absence of Muslims but the emergence of saffron brigade, which makes the difference..... In Kerala, Muslim Eduational Society (MES) which has got the largest number of educational institutes has banned covering faces not only in the classes, but even in the campuses.... In my opinion, the Udupi college is right in disallowing Hijab, as every student has to fall in line with the discipline of the institute by keeping the religion within the four walls of their homes.....

@ Joe, Mangalore, Exactly, 30 years ago I don't remember having seen any student wearing hijab or burkha. Why and how it became a heated issue now? I know Muslim girls of those days have become doctors and managers. Even today they don't wear hijab or burkha. Where are we heading now?
