Udupi, Jan 2: Restricting Muslim girl students from entering the class for wearing Hijab has created much uproar in the district. Six students of government girls PU college had earlier alleged that the principal of the college had restricted them from entering the classroom for wearing Hijab. The issue was brought out by media on December 31.
Many political parties including Congress raised their voices against the discrimination, criticized the principal's decision and demanded to allow the students to enter the classroom.
A meeting was held between the student leaders of Islamic organizations and Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat on Saturday January 1.
In the meeting, the MLA clarified that the students were allowed to wear Hijab in the college campus from the beginning. But it was not permitted inside the class. “If we allow this today, we might encounter various other sort of demands from other students as well and this will be a cause of concern,” he said.
The students countered that other government colleges and private colleges allowed wearing Hijab even inside the class.
Representative of Campus Front of India in a press conference claimed that the college is practicing religious discrimination. They also warned of violent protests if it is not stopped.
The issue has been very challenging for both the parties to resolve. If it is not resolved immediately in a peaceful manner, it will have a negative impact on the studies of other students of the college and harmony of the district.
