Bengaluru: Hike in excise duty expected, liquor prices slated to shoot up

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Feb 8: The state government has decided to hike liquor prices soon. As per the report of an English daily, the government wants to recoup the revenue losses it has suffered due to coronavirus that delivered a deadly blow to economic activities. The government badly needs funds to rejuvenate the financial sector and chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, is facing the tough task of pooling resources for development.

It is said that the Indian Made Liquor and beer prices may attract an additional tax of five to ten percent. The government has set for itself a target of Rs 28,000 crore from the excise department this year. To meet this target, it may increase tax by ten to 15 percent on drinks having alcohol content, officials said.

Last year, the excise tariff on Indian Made Liquor had been increased to 150 percent from 122 percent. In the budget, six percent additional excise tax had been levied. In May 21, a hike of 17 percent was enforced on all liquors except beer and wine. It is said that in this budget, Bommai might enhance excise duty which may come into force from April 1.

My only advise to my friends is to keep stock of the drinks for a year at least. You will save at least 10% after deducting the bank interest. In case BJP comes to power in next election, then buy stock for five years.

The Farming community and house builders are suffering from shortage of workers as well as the increase in daily wages. The Increase in liquor price will directly affect the increase in daily wages. The small scale farmers and the people who wish to build their own houses will suffer.

Ironically TOI was running a article on how there are myths about benefit of alcohol etc etc. Timing of it and the plan of Karnataka Government makes the whole thing dubious. Alcohol consumption will go down and then what will happen to the exchequer? Rather than creating new avenues for tax collection, the Government is trying the time tested lazy method enabled by Excel sheet. Milk further and get more. Was there a time, when excise duty was reduced also? Soon, it may be cheaper to fly to Goa or Pondicherry for a party compared to having it in Karnataka.

Why do people drink costly drinks and waste funds and invite undue health issues and family disharmony. ? Only the government is gaining by way of taxes and revenue collection.
