Indira Canteens face dearth of customers, new menu on cards

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Feb 7: Indira Canteens, which were launched with a lot of expectations by the erstwhile Congress government, are now wearing a deserted look. Initially these canteens witnessed lone lines of people right from school children to auto drivers. There was always demand for the food prepared there.

Things have changed now. Post Corona pandemic, the people have stopped consuming food outside their homes. Many have shifted to villages from the cities. Middle class people are not visiting these canteens anymore. At the same time schools and colleges were also closed. Therefore the Indira Canteens lack customers now.

Initially, the average number of customers visiting these canteens stood at 3 lac. At the end of last year, the number of visitors dropped down to a mere 1 lac.

These canteens were visited mainly by construction workers and daily wage earners. The canteens which registered a sale of 350 breakfasts in the past now are seeing just 100 breakfasts per day. In order to attract more customers, Payasam (sweet porridge) has now been added to the menu. There is also a plan to add Mudde and Soppina Saru in the menu to attract customers. During the pandemic, some machineries also had developed problems.

However, at the moment, the future of these canteens appears bleak.
