Udupi: Student Mrunal Aras reaches home safely from war-torn Ukraine

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Feb 28: After all the crisis amidst Russia-Ukraine and stranded Indians, one student from the city has finally reached home. Mrunal Aras from Udyavar reached home on Monday February 28 evening from the war-hit Ukraine.

Speaking to media Mrunal said, "Bomb blasts took place just 5 km away from our hostel. Our hostel contractor had warned us to pack our bags on a very short notice. Ivano-Frankivsk airport was just 5 km away from us. I had witnessed 3 Russian fighter jets flying over us and the airport was one of the first targets of Russia. Explosion was like a cylinder blast. Romania is around 180 kms from Yuvan. Heavy vehicles were allowed till the Romanian borders, along with thousands of cars and other vehicles. We walked for 6 km to the border in the heavy snowfall. It was around -3 degree Celsius on the border. Indian students are stranded on the Ukraine-Romanian border. As per information, artillery firing took place at the spot. All the hotels are also closed down on the border.

"The Romanian government and Indian embassy in Romania has helped us. The Romanian government provided us with food and all the necessary items. The Indian embassy provided bus facility for 212 people of India in Romania, and all the necessary arrangements were made by them. The war was completely unpredictable. As soon as we received the leads on beginning of war, we had reached the local stores for food items. Currency crisis was also an issue. But finally I have reached. If Ukraine wins this war, I will be happy to go back and continue my studies in Ukraine itself. This is because Ukraine has very good education system. If Russia takes over Ukraine, I would need to rethink about going back," he said.

The family was elated to have their son back home.

I sympathize with these students and their parents. The parents have toiled to send them abroad so that hey have a better future and they will be proud. I pray for their future.

Pradeep and KR Prabhu, never as far as our history goes have seen a Govt Tom tomming of the evacuation of a few hundred , whereas a thousand more are still waiting at the various borders with no direction, no food and no water but in yesterday’s news it was very disheartening to see how we are far ahead and comparing our evacuation process with countries like Nigeria and Egypt . Today we have another respectable Union Minister informing that 90% of these medical graduates fail in the eligibility test . That is rubbing salt to an open wound. Have we compared this also with these countries who are way behind us in repatriation. It is not in any one’s interest to give figures. All that they want is a safe passage without much ado . Medical education is not everyone’s forte . Many want to study but may not have the means to pay . For the parents and their loved ones every minute is a nightmare, till every student reaches home safely . Why to take unwanted credits ?

While we appreciate whatever our government is doing, it is totally incorrect and misleading for a reader to say that the evacuation has become possible only because the BJP government is in power. During the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait several years back, an evacuation much larger in scale than the present one had taken place and the BJP government was not in power then. If my memory serves me right, I think it was V.P. Singh who was heading the government. Thousands of Indians were flown back to India on state owned Air India flights and the then government did a commendable job. Yet, they never blew their trumpet and went about their business on bringing the Indians back. We have the Russia-Ukraine war on our hands now and a handful of flights have indeed brought back many Indians home but just see the unwanted publicity being given. Ministers are on the flights singing praises of their master and in one of the videos lasting a little over a minute, Modi's name has been mentioned three times.

Not only repatriation but it was free by government. Now government makes news and students are charged high.Students go abroad because the same course is 5 times costlier in India.

I feel, its the utmost and prime duty of every government, which is in the power, to bring back its citizens in such conditions or facts similar to this. Government cannot make them stranded and cause them inconveniences. Thats why we have embassy's to safeguard the interests of citizens.

It is good that Indian citizens are brought back with government help. It should not be free ( at taxpayers money) , the students should be charged for it as they have payed high donations for admission to courses in Ukraine, so they are not poor.

Why charge now? People stranded in Kuwait during Iraqi invasion in 1990 were provided free air, road and rail transport to reach their homes. Majority among them were not too poor. In Ukraine the number of Indians is much lower than it was in Kuwait.

Hello Man of Less or No knowledge. Dr Manmohan Singh brought thousands of stranded Indians back to their native land from Libya when Crisis hit Libya. THIS IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION SINCE YOU DON'T READ NEWS: --------- LIBYAN CRISIS (2011–PRESENT) The Libyan Crisis[1][2] refers to the current humanitarian crisis[3][4] and political-military instability[5] occurring in Libya, beginning with the Arab Spring protests of 2011, which led to a civil war, foreign military intervention, and the ousting and death of Muammar Gaddafi. -------- If you do not know who ruled India in 2011 let me tell you it was congress.

Don't exaggerate unnecessarily. More than one and half lakh Indians had also returned safely during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, when Janata Dal under VP Singh was in power. That is still the record breaking evacuation. Air India and Indian Airlines together operated 14 flights daily for about three months. Even after reaching India free transport to home was also provided by railways and ST buses.

KRPrabhu, Bangaluru/Mangalore. In the year 1990 when gulf war was fought Indian Govt. evacuvated much higher number of people than Ukraine. It is not Modi or BJP it is the responsibility of the Govt. at the centre to take care of its citizens. Don't write as Modi hai tho sub kuch mumkim hai, Instead write as "Government is tho sub kuch mumkin hai.
