Student Punished for Absence of Two Days, Dies

Honnavar, Jan 11 (DHNS):
A student who was allegedly made to circle the school field as punishment died here on Monday.

Afzal Hamza Sab, an eighth standard student at New English School, had not attended  classes for two days. According to a complaint lodged by his mother, Abida, the teachers at the school beat him up and asked him to run around the ground as punishment.

Hamza collapsed and died midway. Abida has accused the headmaster, two teachers and the president of the school management of awarding corporal punishment to her son.

The exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained.

As soon as the news spread, irate public ransacked the school. A mob barged into the computer classroom and damaged computers and other school furniture. A few teachers and a policeman sustained injuries in the melee.

Tension prevailed for a while in the town and a holiday was declared for educational institutions in the noon. Block Education Officer P Lingappa said the body has been sent for post mortem and the report was awaited.

Police said that headmaster Ganesh Hebbar and physical education teacher K D Naika have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Ex gratia declared

The school management had declared an ex gratia of Rs one lakh to the family of the deceased student. The Education Department and Town Panchayat have promised Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.

Some of the comments are extreemly disguisting and unecceptable from any point of veiw! No one knows the truth!!! why blame the teacher alone? I am sure the child must have been suffering with some kind of sickness which led to his death.
Teachers are the 2nd parents.Don't you deny this fact!!!! all you commentators!!
No teacher will punish a child for no reason- but present scenario with all kinds of exposures what kind of students you expect!!! These commentators should be given a batch of 70 students to handle oneday! you will endup in mental hospital so called HUCHARA SHALEY!!!

Punishing students is one of the worst crimes done by teachers against their young students. I just wonder if they would punish their own children as they do against students. Nobody complains against those teachers who terrorize the students unless there is serious injury or death. I still remember the severe beatings I got on my both palms by my high-school priest-headmaster when I was in 6th grade for being absent, and I have still not forgiven him. Nor can I forget my 4th Grade teacher who skinned out my thighs for not being able to say poetry by heart. I did not complain to my parents about the beatings I got from the teacher as my little mind thought they might think I deserved the beatings for not performing in the class. A colleague of mine tells me how a nun hit her head to the wall when she was not quick enough to answer a question. When my mother went to complain to school head-sister for beating my elder brother by another nun when he was in 1st Grade, the head-sister justified the nun-teacher’s action and sent my mom home with an “advise” to correct my brother. The head-sister did not bother to summon the nun to enquire why she had to beat the boy. This type of atrocities are still going on against students and parents have no guts to complain to the concerned authority against those brutal teachers as complaining could backfire them.

Wat the hell is going on about teachers? He seems to b a KD only as like his name KD Naika, make him run on the same ground untill he dies. Why these teachers are still in schools? After watching the movie Tare Zameen par they should know how to handle children still their minds are filled with cowdung.and they blame on students about cowdung. I do still remember one teacher when I was studying 5th in Agrar beaten me up but my dad was strong enough to handle her as he registerd a complaint against her in police station and then onwards no teachers were able to touch me ever .
Still by the cruelty of these teachers lot of poor children suffocating. But that curse will fall upon their own children because God will do it as I have seen many examples or else these teachers will finally be trapped by cancer, heart attack, low n high bp etc etc.

    Mr. Gladson Brahmawar,

"If the teachers are really guilty, punish them so that no one dares to such thing again and if there are lies in the story, bring the true fact and spare the innocent." How will you do the above mentioned thing? And who will do it? The kid is gone right. To Control emotions we need to be like machines. Why should any child be asked to run the ground without his wish and will? It's not the first time its happening in India. A lesson should be taught to the teachers as well so that no teacher dares to repeat it.

Whatever the cause of death, the teachers have no right to touch the child. If there is any problem with the child the parents should be contacted. It is the parents who should deal with the child not these teachers. Children please report to your parents if a teacher is illtreating you. It's the parents who give birth, take care of their kids. Teachers are just to do their job, if they cannot better take early pensions. Every teacher after the age of 35 should undergo medical fitness test.Punish that teacher without showing any mercy, and all those mentally sick teachers.May the soul of Afzal rest in peace.

They don't dare to harm the child. I remeber there was this PT sir I think Alwyn in Cascia high school Jeppu who used to hit kids like donkeys. It's best parents talk to the kids and know exactly what goes on in school.. Kids will be so scared..

May Allah grant the young boy a place in Heaven and give his parents the courage and strength to bear the untimely loss of their young son. Ameen. Every community respects teachers and have high esteem for them, as they are regarded next our parents. However, we must recognize that there is always a possibility of bad apple(s) in the basket. As responsible parents, we must identify such bad apple and take necessary measures to report on a timely basis to the appropriate authorities to check and remove it from the basket. School Administration must analyze and scrutinize the complaints against teachers in an extremely serious note and fairly condudct internal investigation to ascertain the merits of the complaint and take appropriate corrective action. School Administration must implement policy prohibiting any punishment which is even appear to hurt the children and lay out a detailed procedure as to what a teacher/parent should follow if they have a grievance against a student or a teacher. I hope the teacher who gave the boy such an irresponsible and inhuman punishment realizes that what if his son is given similar punishment by his teacher? Those teachers who are harsh, should realize what if they are at the receiving end?. Mob is a mob, always, irrational and insensible. What did they get by destroying the school property? Their anger did not help the diseased boy, his parents nor the school.

Beating a child in school is damn wrong,I Hope school teachers learn to control their anger and frustration.there are schools which follow same method of punishments.I have witnessed in 2 schools in Mangalore since 2 years. Some teachers have disgusting attitude!when i was in 9 the standard i was beaten by a cane for 15 minutes and piece of cane had got stuck in my flesh, I cried with agony, yet i was beaten more. What was the explanation? I could not do maths ! and teacher had blood pressure problems! I guess there should be law protecting the children who are so precious and delicate.

My prayers are with the boys family, May God give them peace and strength to bear the precious loss of life which will never return ! I hope these teachers get severe punishment and hence let others learn from their mistakes.

He was asked to take 5 rounds,he succeeded upto 3 rounds n later he came to his PT teacher where he said Im feeling very thirsty plz gimme some water. But the teacher hit him n warned him to take rounds.n this was the time where he collapsed-As per his classmates report.

"Verily we belong to God, and to him shall we return." The matter is not whether the boy died because of the punishment or not but is it the correct way to punish any student in this manner, this act is totally unjustified. May the creator's blessing be upon him and may he rest his soul in eternal peace and may he bestow patience upon his parents.

So hard and terrible to read such
    news. Hearty condolence to the
    bereaved family.

Who gave the right to the teachers
to lay their hands on the student?
Also the punishment of forcing the
student to run around the school
    two times. People with
    certain heart problems can die
    in such running experiments.

    Some percentage of the teachers
teaching in all grades are not
qualified to be teachers. They may
    have the academic requirements
established by the State or the
    Department of Education. Teachers
job is more of a divine side, and
the teachers must have an inborn
nature and calling to be fruitful
    teachers.

In the 7th grade, I was afraid
of going to school because of
the two monster teachers (John sir and Vasupillai sir). Both
of them were evil looking, and simply spanked the students and
the students were crying as if
    marching in the funeral procession
every day. How the student can
learn anything in fear and while
    wiping tears?
    After reading several books in
    psychology and mental disorders,
now I strongly feel that both of them had some
    mental disorders, also anger
    problem. How mentally
sick teachers with high temper can be model teachers?

Those teachers caused the death of
    the student are criminals: they
need deserve any sympathy, and be treated like street criminals.
They must feel the pain of beating in the jail life, or the experience
    of an early death.

The so called Teachers fit to be called as Cheaters? Is it a school or Central jail? Shame on you to this inhuman cruel creatures(teachers or cheaters & the management committee also) of the so called New English School/Huchchara Koota.
This is nothing but a murder of a innocent student/child in a different way by the so called mad authorities of the school. There seem to be some hidden agenda? behind this heinous crime committed by the so called Huchara Kootada Shaley?(school). Are they
fanatics or lunatics? Still these sort of uncultural words are not sufficient to be expressed on these mad monsters(manava roopada

Let The concerned Legal Authorities give justice to the deceased child and their parents by punishing them without any prejudice or bias., so that these sort of inhuman act should not be repeated in future. I still believe that one needs to exercise constraint both on tongue and hands when these kinds of incidents take place. With due respect to the deceased student and his beloved parents' feelings, I believe the concerned persons who ransacked the school should wait for the post-mortem report. Could this news be completely true? Unless this boy was sick previously or had certain ailments, I would not buy the argument that he died only due to the punishment meted out to him by teachers. Teachers might have been brutal and out of the way. But could they be the killers and could the punishment be the only cause for death? We are going through an era, wherein forget about corporal punishment, even a scolding by the teacher is reported home and the parents are ready with accusations next day at the school. If the student had explained properly the reason behind his leave or if one of the parents had accompanied the student to the school after his two-day leave, a lot things could have been clearer. It's quite easy to jump to conclusions in these kind of incidents since they are quite emotional and the concerned persons can encash bigtime since two communities are involved. But what about the ransacking which has troubled perhaps scores of other students? If the teachers are really guilty, punish them so that no one dares to such thing again and if there are lies in the story, bring the true fact and spare the innocent. If justice has to prevail, emotions need to be controlled.

In so many schools these incidents take place despite the teachers being told strictly not to harm or harass children physically. Beating children is forbidden. I have recently heard of a similar incident, one of our staff's daughter aged 10 years studying in a school at Kuppepadau in Mangalore was beaten up by her class teacher till the blood came oozing out from her skin for remaining absent from school.

There were contusions on her body i heard. Very very shameful to treat the innocent children and beat them up ruthlessly for just being absent from school. I had advised our staff to lodge a police complaint against the teacher and she should never dare to repeat such things in her life. I am told when our staff went to school the teacher started crying, begging and pleading him not to file a police complaint against her and being a soft hearted person he let go and sorted out the matter amicably.

Extremely shocking how can the children be beaten up this way? We send our children to school to educate them and not to be treated as animals. The matter should be taken up seriously and all the teachers who are involved in the heinous act should be punished severly.

When will the teachers learn from their mistakes. During our schooldays, there were many children who were ping out of school due to the fear of getting beaten up by the teachers for not doing the home work, not bringing books, rulers etc. It was a routine procedure and most of the classrooms had sticks and beating was a regular feature. At least now it is banned and the teachers should learn how to teach the children within the framework of the law.
