Police Teams Test Athletic Skills at Annual Sports Meet

Mangalore, Jan 11: Taking a break from wielding lathis and chasing criminals, police personnel were on Tuesday January 11 seen in a new exercise - trying their hand at sports events during the annual sports meet of Dakshina Kannada district police held at police parade grounds in the city.
Five police teams viz District Armed Reserve Police team, Mangalore City Police, Panambur sub-division, Puttur sub-division and women's police team are taking part in the event.
This is the first police sports meet ever since the police commissionerate came into existence in the city. The event was organized under the joint aegis of D K district police and Mangalore City Police.
DC Subodh Yadav inaugurated the sports meet and declared the event open by setting free pigeons and a bunch of balloons into the sky.
Speaking on the occasion he said that Mangalore is known to be communally sensitive region, hence police personnel here go through more stress while delivering their duty. Fortunately over the two years there were no major untoward incidents reported. This shows that the citizens here are peace loving and cooperative with the police department, he said.
Taking note of recent events like president Prathiba Patil’s visit to city, Hindu Samajotsava and TP/ ZP elections, he lauded the police for doing significant work in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
To mark the inaugural an 800 metres track event and discus throw competitions were organized for men and women respectively.
Ranjith K Rai of District Armed Reserve Police, Rajesh of Panambur sub division and Ravi of Puttur sub division who won first, second and third prizes respectively were awarded prizes by DC Subodh Yadav.
Events like 100 mtr, 200 mtr, 400 mtr, 800 mtr, 1500 mtr, 4x100 relay javaline, hammer, discuss, long jump, high jump, triple jump will be organized for men while 100 mtr, 200 mtr, shot put, discuss, long jump, high jump will be in women's category.
Team events like tug-of-war, kabbadi, volleyball will also be organized during the two-day sports meet.
SP A Subrahmanyehwar Rao and other police officers were present. Commisioner Seemanth Kumar Singh welcomed the gathering.
