Another student from Udupi reaches home safely from war-hit Ukraine

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Mar 5: On a blissful Saturday, Dr Dhananjay Bagli and his family let out a sigh of relief after their son reached home from the war-hit Ukraine.

Rohan D B, son of Dr Dhananjay Bagli, senior scientist of Brahmavar agricultural science center, finally reached home 10 days after the war began between Russia and Ukraine.

Speaking to the media Rohan said, "We were shifted to the bunkers as soon as the war began. We had stocked food for a few days but as there were around 9 people in our group, the food consumption was high. On the first day of the war itself, the Wi-Fi facility was stopped. Shelling took place frequently. Ukrainians were prepared and had built bunkers to stay in their apartments. Day-by-day, the attack was increasing. Finally on March 1, we decided to move to the border. We boarded a train to Lyviv from Kharkiv. We had to travel for 1,300 km to reach the border. The train journey was about 22 hours. Many nations had arranged trains for their students including Pakistan.”

Speaking about the Indian government's evacuation efforts, Rohan said, "The Indian embassy in Ukraine notified us really late. We would have left Ukraine earlier, if they had informed us about the possibility of war. A week before the war began, the USA gave a 48-hour deadline for their nationals to leave Ukraine with strict warnings. But no such action was initiated from the Indian embassy in Ukraine. Transportation was another major issue we faced. I thank the embassy and Indian government for helping me reach home from the Poland border. I request the government to evacuate all the remaining students and Indian nationals as soon as possible. They need to arrange transportation to reach the borders. Body of my friend Naveen should also be brought back home as soon as possible.”

Sharing his thoughts about Naveen, the Indian student who lost his life in the shelling in Ukraine, Rohan said, "Naveen was like my younger brother. We were really close. He had moved out of the bunker during a safe time. Normally at around 8 am, no attack takes place as far as I know. From 6 am to 11 am, cities will be peaceful. But on that day, it was a surprise attack. He was about to move to the border the very next day.”

Dhananjay, father of Rohan also thanked the government, officials in the embassy, district administration and all the officials for helping him bring his son back home.

Udupi deputy commissioner M Kurma Rao, and additional deputy commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu also visited the family and enquired about the situation on ground.

Speaking to the media, DC Kurma Rao said, "Today, Rohan has reached home safely. Two more students from our district are yet to reach the homeland. We have been in touch with the parents of these students. Anifred Ridly D'Souza has already reached Poland and is safe. Glenwell Fernandes is also staying in a place advised by the embassy and is safe. They will reach their homes soon. There is nothing to worry about.”

Modi did not do anything to evacuate Indians from Ukraine. He just halted the war for for 2 days and a number of Romanian INDIAN AIR FORCE aircrafts flew them into India safely.

The Indian Embassy in Kyiv issued several advisories starting from Feb 15, 2022. The Indian advisory came on the heels of the US "strict advisory" to its citizens residing in Ukraine. The least that an Embassy can do is to issue advisories to leave the country. It cannot stand with a cane stick and forcefully prod every citizen (who are adults btw) to adhere to these advisories. Majority of the Indians adhered to these advisories. However, those with a "chalta hai" attitude decided to brush off these advisories and remained in Ukraine, ignorant of the fact that such advisories always have the strong backing of intelligence inputs. Transportation not arranged? Well, the Indian Govt isn't obliged to arrange transportation especially if the citizens have travelled to Ukraine out of their own free will. The students havent gone to Ukraine on Govt sponsored education trips. After the invasion, its incorrect to term the difficulties faced by the Indian Govt in its evacuation efforts as "faux pas" especially when the Govt is doing its best from evacuating its citizens from what is currently a war zone. The easiest thing in the world is to be an armchair activist!

Very true, dear Pinto, India. As you rightly said, many here are armchair activists! Even our typical Rohan Dhananjay Bagli was a 'chalta hai' bhai-type till the last moment; now in the limelight without any gratitude! Very pathetic mental attitude! Thank God, at least Dhanajayji had a few good words for Indian authorities! It seems, one female did not want to evacuate without her pet dog! God knows her fate!!

Kindly check the date-wise advisory from Embassy of India in Ukraine here and then comment. Sorry, Rohan is back and happy. His story is inconsistent - expected from all those who return from war zone. https://www.eoiukraine.gov.in/index.php

The Indian embassy Babus did not help and India is the only country who did not warn the students or communicated anything while all the countries evacuated before the war.Indians ministers went for picnic to Romania and Poland in the name of "evacuation" which is not.If you bring Indians from war-torn Ukrain its evacuations...but not from other countries...This govt is most useless but only good PR stunt...

Charles D'Mellow, Pangala, I fully agree with your comments and there is no doubt about it. But I would like to add something more. Indian officials were waiting for them to go there and pick these stranded people in Ukraine a war-affected area.

They knew that USA has asked their citizen to leave. Didn't these have basic common sense that they also should leave? Why they were waiting for special invitation from Indian embassy to leave???

just saw in bbc live contact with Indian students who are miserable and at risk in ukraine... they are unable to bear bunker any more and too far from borders to try to flee...rescue can only be through special dedicated train for indians through humanitarian corridor... india should ask friend russia to ceasefire until UP elections are over... then our leaders may get time to organise safe passage out of Ukraine for indian students.... better see foreign media (bbc / cnn) for clear picture... indian students are the largest foreign students group....
