Mumbai, Jan. 15 (IANS) Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan Saturday expressed shock and grief over the death of at least 104 pilgrims near the famed Sabarimala shrine in Kerala.
In a message, the governor said he was deeply saddened to learn about the tragedy that has befallen the devotees visiting the Sabarimala temple.
"The magnitude of the tragedy is particularly disquieting," said Sankaranarayan, who hails from Kerala. "My heart goes out to the families of each one of those who lost life, and I wish speedy recovery to those injured in the stampede," he added.
The stampede occurred Friday night at Pulumedu near the town of Vandiperiyar, some 30 km from the shrine, when the pilgrims were returning after watching the Makara Jyothi light, the most important event of the pilgrimage, from a hillock.
