Gadag: Woman files for divorce, husband attacks her with machete

Gadag, Mar 11 (IANS): The Karnataka police have launched a search for a man who brutally attacked his converted wife who was seeking a divorce, with a machete in Gadag district of Karnataka.

The victim identified as Apoorva Ananth Puranik alias Arfa Banu, is critical and battling for her life at a hospital in the district.

Hindu groups have demanded that it is a case of 'Love jihad' and the police department must investigate the case thoroughly to break the network.

According to the police, Apoorva (26) had decided to separate from her husband Mohammad Ejaz Shiroor (30) after finding out that he was already married and had three children.

The victim had shifted to her parents house with her son four months ago. The accused had attacked Apoorva in a park and hit her with a machete 23 times on her head, shoulders, face and hands on Thursday and fled from the site.

Raju Khanappanavar, Coordinator of Sri Ram Sena, said Apoorva has been married fraudulently to a Muslim man.

The accused had married a Brahmin Hindu woman and had attempted to kill her.

This is a case of Love jihad where the accused had planned to trap the victim after checking her family background which is condemnable and the police should not only arrest the accused but must investigate the network trapping Hindu girls.

Apoorva, a graduate and the only daughter in her family, met the accused while he was pursuing his education and driving an auto.

The couple fell in love and eventually got married in 2018.

Mohammad never told the victim that he was already married and had three children.

Apoorva was later converted to Islam. Her family had also accepted her marriage and maintained cordial relations with Mohammad's family.

The victim got to know about Mohammad's first wife and his three children which led to a rift between them.

The accused started to force Apoorva to wear a burqa, cook non-vegetarian food, follow traditions of Islam and completely abandon Hindu rituals, which Apoorva continued even after her marriage.

Not being able to bear the torture, Apoorva had shifted to her mother's house and filed for divorce in a family court.

Despite this the accused threatened Apoorva to follow Islam as she had married him.

Shivaprakash Devaraju, Gadag Superintendent of Police, said the accused will be arrested soon.

heinous act..but according to our law he cannot be stoned or hanged in public..so the usual saga of lengthy court procedures will start...less said the better...because this act is done by a minority guy it assumes more significance in today's India...many such cases and even honour killings happen in tamilanadu, andhra and north and western India but they do not even come out in newspapers..

Girls and Boys should understand if you are in love with any other faith person than it should be pure love nothing else and if he /she is forcing you to change your religion than thats not love it's purely selfishness. If you are in love then you have to erase religion ka column. Jai Hind

When the hormonal secretion is at its peak, youngsters cannot to do rational thinking and just want to be with the individual they have given their heart to until a semblance of maturity sets in; during this phase it's almost impossible to convince them! In this case, leaving religion aside, the biggest fault of this guy is he cheated on her by hiding his earlier marriage, which she would not have expected in her dreams; it implies that this guy just wanted her to satisfy his carnal desires! But this guy should have left her alone when he was exposed and she decided to move away from him. Trying to kill her was the height of his infatuation towards her, and a big mistake for which he should be given exemplary punishment. BTW, I just fail to comprehend how nobody got wind of his earlier marriage in this digital era? IMHO, converting this episode to communal issue is not justified as the girl herself chose to be with him and was a major. It's her laxity for not having made relevant background check on him before marriage. The above is my personal opinion and not in support of either of them. Hope and pray she survives the deadly attack.

Apoorva, a graduate and the only daughter in her family, met the accused while he was pursuing his education and driving an auto. --- Love won't happen in one day or one month. Instead of teaching and encourging evil things better educate the youngsters the real meaning of life. Responsibilities of the family and duties. Religion and Rowdyism is not solution for our own mistakes. Every one must either you get Love marriage or arranged marriage must inform the parents and take their blessings.

All religions must work towards stoping craze of love marriages. Irrespective of inter-caste or inter-religion most of these love marriages will end up in sarrow or divorce, suicide and brake ups in family relationships etc

Even if the inter-religious couple is adamant to continue such relationship for the sake of so-called love, then they must go for a civil marriage where religion does not come in the picture. I feel this should be made a rule so that there will be no compulsion or condition for conversion after marriage. Here this is a case of betrayal and forced conversion.
