Mangaluru, Mar 26: An unidentified car knocked down a scooter that was driven by a woman at Kapikad on national highway 66 on Saturday March 26 and sped away. The pillion rider was killed in the accident. The police are now making efforts to trace the car which caused the hit-and-run accident.

The woman who lost her life in the accident was Emilda D'Souza belonging to the prestigious John Bakery family. She was residing near Umamaheshwar temple at Kapikad near Thokottu. On the occasion of the birthday celebrations of her granddaughter on Saturday, Emilda had visited Thokottu church early in the morning, and had returned after taking part in the special prayers. She had walked half of the distance with relatives towards her home and was picked by a lady known to her named Flavy D'Souza, who was riding an Activa scooter.

When the scooter reached near Raj Caterers at Kapikad, a car which came behind rammed into the two-wheeler from behind. The pillion rider, Emilda, was thrown to the road. She was rushed to a hospital immediately, but passed away before reaching there. Scooter rider Flavy D'Souza (47) was injured and now being treated in a hospital.

It is said that Emilda had made arrangements to celebrate the birthday of her granddaughter by ordering Idlis for lunch. The family plunged into the abysmal gloom of grief because the lady died on the birthday of her granddaughter. Emilda is survived by husband, a son, a daughter, and grandchildren.

City south traffic police have registered a case and investigation is on.

Even sometimes we feel that even walking on roads is also very dangerous and risky these days.

Very tragic indeed on a day that was going to be full of joy for the family. Rest in Peace, Emilda. You are precious to the Lord. The hit-ahnde-run-driver will meet his fate one day. The tragedy he perpetrated will forever haunt him. Better he come forward and give himself up to the police; he will not be allowed to rest until he is grabbed by the police. Traffic in the city is out of control. Motor bikes should be required to ride on the extreme left (or right, as the case may be and cars should not ride behind them. Easier said than done on narrow roads, I agree, but efforts should be made to widen where possible. Motor bikes are "suicide" vehicl

Over speeding.. reckless driving...vehicles having high power .. acceleration.. Driving too close .. not keeping safe distance between vehicles main causes ... These are not accidents but murders .... Of innocents .. Lifetime cancellation of licence .. stringent jail terms will deter ... All countries .. advanced .. USA etc .. gulf .. etc have strict driving laws ..

In our country, all roads have a faulty construction design NOT adhering to international standards. Coincidence with drivers driving recklessly as if they're the owners of the road or in an abject urgency to rush to a crematorium or to answer nature's call. I can't believe that in such a small coastal place in Mangalore there is no decency, no decorum. I don't know what is wrong and where. Even in our huge Bombay metropolis and distant suburbs outside the jurisdiction things are a million times. No matter how much of efforts is lost in creating awareness through jingles, media awareness etc. the drivers will never improve. They adopt a chaltha hain chalatha hain policy.

Joseph Qatar ,problem is roads are too narrow and more vehicles driven without any rules.A road to bicycles is need of the hour ,and big vehicles such as lorrys and buses have to drive by side with definite speed of 80:Sad incident If only she walked further ,instead of picked up by other. But its Gods wish.Man cant avoid it .May her soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to the family.

RIP. National Highways should not be treated as ordinary roads, unfortunately they pass through congested areas and people become casual.
