Karkala: Swachh Bharat Mission - Money squeezes out of dry waste at Nitte

Karkala, Mar 31: Under the Swachh Bharat Mission programme, the zilla panchayat has implemented the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) under Integrated Public Solid Waste Management Centre at Nitte. It will begin functioning on April 3.

The centre will be able to process ten tonnes of solid waste every day and scientifically dispose and there will be effective waste handling with the minimum use of human resources.

The main purpose of MRF is to handle waste from the gram panchayat limits. The plan envisages handling of the waste at the central level and getting resources out of waste. The waste which cannot be recycled are assigned to official and recycle centres. Those who work at the centre are aimed to be provided with good facilities, social security, health and security.

Sahas Zero Waste private company has provided technical guidance for the setting up of MRF centre. Mangala Resources Management will operate the unit. As many as 42 gram panchayats from Karkala, Udupi, Kaup and Hebri taluks will fall under the MRF centre. Dry waste produced in the houses of these taluks will be brought to the local dry waste management centre and Swachh complex. Every week, waste collecting vehicle of MRF collects dry waste from these complexes and brings them to the MRF unit. With the help of conveyor belts, dry waste is segregated into 25 to 30 types. The waste so sorted is converted into bales for easy transportation. Reusable waste is sold to official recycling companies. The other waste is transported to cement factories.

The unit has 30 employees out of whom 15 sort out waste while four operate the baling machine. One manages accounts while two more are security staff. Two other housekeeping staff also have been provided. Two are allotted to monitor the unit. One driver and two loaders are also provided.

The MRF unit is situated in 10,000 square feet building where ten tonnes of waste can be processed. Grant of Rs 2.5 crore has been given by rural drinking water and sanitation department under the Swachh Bharat Mission. A total of 60.67 lac has been used for the centre from rural employment guarantee scheme, 15th finance commission, gram vikas scheme and Nitte gram panchayat. 'Zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr Y Naveen Bhat, says that this unit has provided solution to the problem of handling solid waste generated in panchayat level and that the locals have bagged jobs. He stated that detailed project report for the installation of a mini MRF unit in Badagabettu gram panchayat has also been submitted and land has been earmarked for two MRF centres for which detailed project reports are under preparation.
