Over One Lac Enumerators in State’s Biggest Headcount

Bangalore, Feb 7: Over a lac enumerators will be carrying out the biggest headcount in Karnataka as part of the nation-wide Census 2011 operations for population enumeration from February 9 to 28.
For the first time, data pertaining to the third gender would be collected and the collection of data on the date of birth along with age is also introduced for compilation of accurate age-wise statistics.
Karntaka’s Director of Census Operations T K Anil Kumar said houseless population would be enumerated as on February 28, 2011.
A revisional round would be carried out from March 1 to 5, he said.
A massive army of 1,03,523 enumerators would go to door-to door and collect information and data on 29 questions related to marital status, cultural, literacy, economic activity, travel to place of work, reason for migration, and fertility.
Enumerators, primarily teachers and government officials, would cover 29,340 villages in 176 taluks of 30 districts of the State.
The information collected about individuals would be kept confidential. There would be a column on the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in Census 2011, he said.
It is stated that the Central government has decided to hold caste-based enumeration as a separate exercise from June to September 2011.
In the first phase of house-listing done from April to May last year during which the buildings, houses and amenities available as well the assets owned was collected and systematically listed.
Bar codes and form numbers have been introduced for easy identification and retrieval of forms up to district level and all enumerators had been given identity cards, Anil Kumar said.
The number of codes for recording different types of disability have been increased from five in 2001 to eight to cover more types of disabilities and also multiple disabilities.
The marginal worker is classified into two categories – if he or she worked for three months or more but less than six months; and if the person worked for less than three months, the Director said.
More emphasis was laid in the training classes for netting accurately the responses to the questions related to gender issues to make the Census 2011 gender responsive.
A district specific data sheet on key gender statistics is provided to all the census functionaries, he said.
A total of 15,303 enumerators are involved in the population enumeration in the Bangalore City corporation limits alone.
