Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, May 5: The Karnataka Legislature Assurance Committee chairman B M Farooq on Thursday, May 5 said that effluents released by the industries in the region of Surathkal, Kuthetooru Bajpe, Katipalla and surroundings polluted the environment and affected the people, agriculture, horticulture, and fisheries.

He was addressing a press meet at Zilla Panchayath Hall here on Thursday, May 5.

He also said that the committee has witnessed the problem at the grass root level because of pollution. The river that flows in this region is contaminated because of effluents released by these industries into the water.

"Two types of fish species are already extinct. People in the region are facing skin problems and suffering from lung cancer due to pollution. Hence, there is a need for a detailed study. It has been brought to the notice of the administration and a report has been sought in this regard," he added.

He also said that the committee will recommend the government to conduct a comprehensive study on the impact of pollution through an international firm.

"It is found in the study that sand mining in the limits of CRZ has led to massive sea erosion in the region, " he added.

B M Farooq also informed that details regarding the total number of Kannadigas working in the special economic zone will be submitted to the government.
