Mangalore: Two Die in Bus-Scooter Collision in Suratkal

Mangalore, Feb 22: In a gory accident that occurred near National Institute of Technology Karnataka’s (NITK) campus in Suratkal near here on the evening of Monday February 21, two persons, Ronald D’Costa (44) from Damaskatte, Kinnigoly, and Baby (38), a native of Maradka near Moorukaveri, Kinnigoly, lost their lives. The ill-fated victims were travelling towards Kinnigoly from Suratkal, while the bus was carrying college students to their homes in Mangalore.
The accident occurred at the spot where the under-pass work is going on a near NITK on national highway 17. Eyewitnesses said that the scooter hit the bus coming from the opposite direction, when it was being driven towards the two-lane road at the above spot. The scooter was crushed in the accident, while the windshield of the bus was shattered.
Although both the victims, who suffered severe head injuries, were immediately taken to a hospital in Suratkal, they could not be saved, as they had bled profusely.
The spot where this accident took place, has witnessed several accidents in the recent past. The vehicles which move at high speed on the four-lane highway, suddenly approach the place where the under-pass work is going on, where they have to meet the two-way road. This is the place where the density of vehicles suddenly increases, and the buses coming from the direction of Udupi continue to be driven at high speed at this point.
Ronald, an agriculturist by profession, who had worked in the Gulf region for some time in the past, is survived by wife and a son. Baby, who also worked in the Gulf, had come home four months back. She was hunting for a job here, and had gone to Mangalore with her acquaintance, Ronald, in this connection.
