Mangalore: SAC to Pay Rich Cultural Tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on Feb 26

Mangalore, Feb 24: St Aloysius College will celebrate Tagore’s Day on Saturday February 26 under the leadership of the postgraduate department of English and the Durga Pooja and Dassera Celebration Committee, Mangalore.
The programme will pay tribute to Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the author of our national anthem, on his 150th birth anniversary.
The event will begin at 10.00am with the inter-collegiate fest ‘EngQuest Twenty 11’. This will have a talk on Tagore followed by a quiz competition, singing and drama competitions – all based on the life and works of Tagore.
A ballet on the life, personality, philosophy and the works of Rabindranath Tagore will be held in the evening accompanied by PowerPoint presentations.
Recitation of Tagore’s selected poems as well as ‘Rabindra Nritya’, ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ and Rabindra ballet in the Shantiniketan style will also be staged. The event will primarily be in English interspersed with Bengali.
Members of the local Bengali community and the students of St Aloysius College are collaborating to present the event. Three ballets – ‘Balmiki Prativa’, ‘Chandalika’, and ‘Chitrangada’ will be staged.
Balmiki Prativa tells the story of Maharishi Valmiki who was a renowned dacoit who turned into a pious man due to the influence of a little girl. Chandalika speaks of equality in society irrespective of birth, while Chitrangada is a story of love and beauty with Arjuna and Chitrangada as the protagonists.
