Karnataka Mulls Mandatory Use of CFL Bulbs

Karnataka Mulls Mandatory Use of CFL Bulbs

Bangalore, Feb 28 (IANS) Use of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs in all households in Karnataka may be made mandatory as part of measures to reduce power consumption, state energy minister Shobha Karandlaje said Monday.

"We have decided that use of CFL bulbs in households in the state should be made compulsory," she said at a function here to launch a campaign to save power.

The CFL bulbs consume 80 percent less power than incandescent bulbs, she said.

Karandlaje said that to encourage people to go for CFL bulbs, they will be sold at Rs.15 each, with the government subsidising their prices.

Officials of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company would go to each house in the city and sell four CFL bulbs at Rs.15 each.

"The families will have to hand over four incandescent bulbs to these officials," Karandlaje said.

Launching the campaign "Belaku Yojane" (Light Programme), Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said his government would come out with measures to ensure all households in the state use CFL bulbs by September this year.

He said: "We need to educate people to go for CFL bulbs. The manufacturers, government employees and women's organisations would be involved in formulating the programmes," the chief minister said.

Karnataka is a power-deficit state and frequent power cuts, particularly in the summer months of April-May, have become a norm for several years.

The state needs around 7,200 MW of power daily, but the supply is 6,000 MW. The deficit is being met by purchasing power from energy-surplus states.

I partially agree with the comment by Ms.flavian dsouza. Development of LED lamps is still at initial stages and still there is doubt about the longitivity of LED lamps. Once this is established, I think the future lies with LED lamps.

CFL lamps are good with respect to energy conservation but due to the straboscopic effect it is not very good for eyes. Normally mixture of incandescent and CFL lamps in a room is a good combination.

Using CFL bulbs is a good idea provided adequate care is taken for its safe disposal.
Once usage is made mandatory, replacement must be allowed only by exchanging the old/damaged/ burnt out CFL bulb. This will ensure its safe disposal.
Otherwise, will any villager care to take the bulb to the disposal centre?

Really its a good move from Shoba karandlage, this lady is serious in her ministry. CFL bulbs for Rs. 15 excellent.(must come for long life at least a year)(normally Rs.80 to 100)That will reduce the power consumption in place of ordinery bulbs. "Belaku Yojane" hatts off to Karandlaje.(She should have been with Soniya In Congress Party, BJP guys dont like her honesty and are always pulling her legs)

CFL bulbs are good as energy savers but why is the Govt going to subsidise anything. Give a contract to a CFL bulb manufacturer and let him arrange for the replacement of normal bulbs with the cfl ones. Everyone should know that energy saving bulb manufacturers can get "carbon credits" for such replacements which more than covers the difference in costs. It will be interesting to know what differnce in price is the Minister talking about that the Govt will subsidise- it must be made public and all CFL bulb manufacturers should be allowed to make open & public quote for their bulbs with terms being offered.
There are sufficient scams around lets not allow another one to show its ugly head while trying to save electricity.
As for its disposal, like medical waste, sealed boxes should be kept by the Electricity Dept wherever there are bill payment centres and the old bulbs put in them for proper safe disposal to prevent mercury poisoning- if a bulb bursts at home, the fire brigade should be called in for its safe clearance (it only needs safe collection & disposal)

Shivanand Shetty,Mangalore/Bangalore/USA. I never said NOT to use. Read my comments and try to understand. I mention it very clearly that CFL bulbs contain the MERCURY and it is lethal. So the government must take care of disposable of all CFL bulbs or the company and sellers must take care. Hope you know why I am mentioning it.

In India including Karnataka State many people through the bulbs either in rain water drainage or in public garbage places. Rain drainage water will go to the rivers and the mercury will go along with it and the water will contaminate where fishes will die and it is dangerous for us to drink. Public places garbage is other issue and these bulb may break and it may get pricked to the pedestrians and hope you know what will happen. Hope You Understood My Point.

A very good idea and scheme. Bulbs have longer life, less energy consumption. The only drawback is mercury is used in cfl bulbs and if a bulb breaks or bursts it can be a health hazard. So please enlighten/educate the public about this and proper disposal while selling or suppling the bulbs.
Keep up the good work Madam Shobha.

A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), also known as a compact fluorescent light or energy saving light (or less commonly as a compact fluorescent tube), is a type of fluorescent lamp. Many CFLs are designed to replace an incandescent lamp & can fit into most existing light fixtures formerly used for incandescent.
Compared to general service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use less power & have a longer rated life. In the United States, a CFL has a higher purchase price than an incandescent lamp, but can save over US$40 in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime. Like all fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain mercury, which complicates their disposal.
CFLs radiate a different light spectrum from that of incandescent lamps. Improved phosphor formulations have improved the perceived color of the light emitted by CFLs such that some sources rate the best "soft white" CFLs as subjectively similar in color to standard incandescent lamps.

It is funny to watch the CM and other ministers holding the bulb and making show up. When ever the Government wants to implement any changes they must look at the advantages & disadvantages in that issue. Now in CFL case it will save electricity & the life of lamp will increase. The government & the authorities must know the disadvantage of this bulb when it comes for disposable. These bulbs contains MERCURY, so awake CM & ministers.
Dear Citizens please aware of the coincidence of MERCURY contamination & take care.
