Beyonce Donates Gaddafi Cash to Haiti

Los Angeles, March 4 (DPA) Superstar Beyonce performed a private concert in the Caribbean for the family of Muammar Gaddafi, but her publicist said Thursday the singer/actress had donated the proceeds to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti as soon as she discovered the identity of her client.

"All monies paid to Beyonce for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, over a year ago," the statement said.

"Once it became known that the third party promoter was linked to the Gaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause."

Beyonce's announcement came just days after Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado announced plans to donate to charity money she earned from a concert given to Gaddafi several years ago.

"In 2007, I received 1 million (dollars) from the (Gaddafi) clan to perform a 45 min show for guests at a hotel in Italy. I am going to donate the (money)," she wrote on Twitter.

It is thought that Beyonce received a similar amount for her performance.

Gaddafi has been fighting to maintain his grip on power even as the European Union, UN and US imposed sanctions on the North African country and clashes between security forces and protesters continued.
