'Attack on Rakesh Tikait for not speaking in Kannada', accused tell police

Bengaluru, Jun 2 (IANS): The three accused persons, who attacked Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Singh Tikait, have taken a u-turn and claimed that they attacked him for not speaking in Kannada, police sources said on Thursday.

The police also said that they were probing the statements of the accused.

Tikait was attacked and assaulted with black paint while addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan in Bengaluru on Monday.

The police had arrested three persons -- Bharath Shetty, the President of Bharatha Rakshana Vedike, Shivakumar and Pradeep.

The accused had taken the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while carrying out the attack and while being taken away by the police. The investigating officers are seeing the development as a premeditated act. "The accused's statement is misleading and they will be investigated further," said police sources.

The police have taken the accused persons on a 6-day remand. The investigations have also revealed the past crime history of the accused persons.

Shivakumar had barged on the platform and attacked Rakesh Tikait and later tried to attack other farm leaders also. Investigations have shown that Shivakumar was an accused in a murder case and is convicted for life imprisonment.

He got released for good conduct in 2015. After the release, he was active in an organisation with his sister and took part in many protests. The police are investigating his involvement in other crimes.

Another accused Pradeep is a cab driver. He had poured black paint on Rakesh Tikait and others. The police have also launched a hunt for women who were seen with the accused during the event on that day. Police said that all of them have disappeared after the incident.

Tikait was attending a press conference on "Raita Chaluvali, Aatmavalokana haagu Spasteekarana Sabhe" (Farmer's Movement, Introspection and Clarification Meeting) organized by Karnataka State Farmers Association and Hasiru Sene.

The Congress has described the incident as a black mark on the state.

Ink thrown for not speaking in Kannada? First of all they were in disguise as journalists and entered, then they were ready with ink along with them when they entered. Is it not a pre planned? Whom are they fooling? By the way how can one ask someone from other state to speak in local language when they are not from here? Give them third degree.

@Cynthia... The current situation of India is such that, all opposition leaders who wants to speak either they are lobbied not to speak, if don't listen then are threatened with raids from multiple hijacked institutions. Since almost all politicians have amassed illegal wealth they will shut their mouth... If any non politician wants to speak or protest, based on their religion certain selected cases will be slapped. If Muslim then it's UAPA or NSA. Such is the pathetic situation of the country... Weaker opposition or no opposition means death of democracy.... Indians fought with Britishers and won no matter had to sacrifice wealth and life, but atleast had unity in fighting against Britishers, but now as soon as any Muslim or Christian wants to protest for atrocities, all of a sudden it will take a communal angle and there is media to ignite fire to it.. We have not lost hope, history has seen more worse than this current situation, but every dictatorship and wrongdoings has to end. The end will be such that there won't be any rise again.

Signs of desperation... Murder of Moosawala, false case against Delhi Health minister, reopening Herald case and this heinous attack are all done to suppress the growing appeal of opposition especially AAP... It is the undecided voters who will go back from BJP in coming days... They may scrape through in 2024 but 2029 will remain a dream...

Trying to play victim card -- KANANDA ETC -- no ideal kannadiga will protest in this manner ---- if at all this is the issue -- but all know actual reasons-- All bjp leaders including governor speak in hindi -- BJP propagates -- one nation one language etc-- it is also to be noted they are supporters of PM MODI -- so BJP has to condemn--
