Bengaluru, Jun 18: The state government informed high court that goshalas will be established in all districts of the state by the end of December 2022.
A public interest litigation was filed in the high court by the legal services committee urging to direct government to start goshala in every district and to also provide hay, water and land for the existing goshalas. The divisional bench led by justice Rituraj Avasthi which conducted the inquiry was informed by the government that in some districts the goshalas have already started functioning and in rest by the end of this year the same will be established.
In its explanation to the high court, the government said, “There are 77,075 stray cows in the state. The government has decided to open a goshala for the maintenance of the same in every district. Rs 15 crore grant is earmarked for the same. By the end of December 2022, every district will have goshala. This will be done in phases. In addition, the government has also decided to open 70 goshalas and a grant of Rs 50 crore is reserved for the same.”
“The government has also given financial assistance to the 197 goshalas run by private organizations. In the fiscal 2021-22, Rs 3.77 crore and for the fiscal 2022-23, Rs 3.77 crore are released for private goshalas. The responsibility of the same is given to District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) led by deputy commissioners of respective districts,” said the certificate presented to high court by the government.
The bench postponed the inquiry by saying that if there is any objection by the petitioner the same can be submitted to the court.
