Young Dentists Reminded of Social Responsibility at MCODS College Day

Mangalore, Mar 16: Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) celebrated its annual day at T M A Pai Convention Hall here on Wednesday March 16. An award ceremony was also held on the occasion.

Dr Chandrashekar Shetty, vice-chancellor, D Devaraja Arasu University, Kolar, was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he said that higher education will help in self-reliance among individuals and will also be an investment for the future, which will result in the overall development of the nation.

Making note of the human resources in the health sector, he said that at present there are 6 physicians for every 10,000 patients in our country, while there is 1 dentist for every 10,000 patients and 5 beds for every 10,000 patients. The statistics need to be improved for better health prospects of the nation. He also pointed out that medical facilities in rural areas are still not advanced.

Dr Shetty added that the medical field is a good blend of art and science wherein patients are to be treated by doctors with concern, care, and compassion and not merely with applied science. He lamented that the healing touch of doctors is missing now. He also suggested that the students know their social accountability when they get around to practicing their knowledge.

Dr K Ramnarayan, vice-chancellor, Manipal University, Dr V Surendra Shetty, dean, Manipal College of Dental Scinces, Mangalore, faculty members Dr Jayanth Vaibhav, Dr Rajgopal, and Dr Dilip Nayak were present. The chief guests handed over awards to the outgoing students of the 2006 batch. Cultural programmes followed.
