Mangalore, Mar 24: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, Subodh Yadav, and city corporation commissioner, Dr K N Vijayaprakash, conducted a joint inspection of road works in progress at different parts of the city, on Wednesday March 23.

Both the officials visited Pumpwell Junction, Yekkur, Simon Lane and Red Building Lane near Capitanio, and Urundadigudde near Kavoor Panjimogaru in the city. Officials from various departments accompanied the officials.

The deputy commissioner instructed the national highway officials to build box culverts in place of huge pipes proposed to be laid for allowing water to pass through below the roads at Pumpwell Junction, where national highway 17 and 13 meet each other. Road widening work is in progress at this junction.

During the visit of the officials to Capitanio, local corporator, Jacinta Boromeo, accompanied by local residents, placed before them problems faced by them, apart from seeking fulfilments of certain demands. The city corporation commissioner told them that tender process has been completed in respect of conducting patch works to Simon Lane Road, and that this work will begin soon. He also assured to repair the Red Building Lane Road at the spot where it has been badly damaged.

When the engineers said that various works are being executed within the city corporation limits, but that the number of contractors was comparatively less, the deputy commissioner suggested to hand over works to Land Army Corporation. The commissioner also said that notices will be served on the concerned, about heaping of mud witnessed on the roadside on national highway. He feared that this mud will create problems in case of rains.

The officials also surveyed the proposed underground drainage effluent treatment plant at Yekkur and proposed slum development proposed at Urundadigudde.

I was gathering info as to how to go about doing something and here I read an article dated March 23, 2011 and nothing was done. It is pity that inspite of giving rteminders that the corporation does not take any proper action in improving the situation of by lanes and cross roads where maximum population resides.Corporation only does cosmetic works of main roads with the help of useless consultants and advisors and fill thier kitty in a good way. it is shame that we have experty to ute works but all planned in such away that nothinmg happens the way it should

Dear DC and Commissioner, please also go around the city and inspect the "side-drain" works that are supposed to be in progress. Contractors dig trenches and disappear for weeks causing inconvenience to the general public. Just one instance of this rampant negligence is the Bejai- Kapikad road where things are progressing at a snail's pace. A drain being constructed across the road that leads to Bejai KMC is so unscientific that once it is completed, the road will have to be redone completely for about 20-25 m. Your engineers/ consultants do not seem to be having any kind of consideration for impact of the drain work on the access to side streets OR long term solutions.

Also this policy of going for lowest bid should be done away with. The contractor who takes up the work needs to have a penalty clause pertaining to quality and schedule adherence embedded in the contact. They also should be held responsible for upkeep of the roads for a maintenance period of 3-5 years after completion of work.

And regarding your thought of engaging the land army, given their "reputation", all development works will just follow the IRCON way...
