Udupi: High prices of fish dampens spirits of pescatarians

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jul 9: Fish rate in the district has sky rocketed as the fishing boats do not venture into the sea due to the annual prohibition of catching fish due to breeding season. This has dampened the spirit of Pescatarians who love to eat hot fish curry or fry during rains.

Generally in the coastal districts, fishing is not allowed to carry on in deep sea in the months of June and July. Only traditional boat fishing is allowed. But their catch is too less to cater to huge number of fish eaters of coastal districts. This invariably results in high market price for fish.

When the normal deep sea fishing season is on, the rate of pomfret fish is around Rs 300 to 400. Now the same is costing around Rs 700 to 800. The rate of Sardines has doubled from Rs 100 per kg to Rs 200. Similarly, rate of king fish has reached Rs 1000 per kg. Mackerels which were available at 10 fishes for Rs 200 are costing Rs 400 now.

Most of the fishes that arrive in the market are frozen ones. Only those which are caught by traditional boat fishermen are fresh. But fish lovers are not showing much interest as they think that only frozen fish is sold during monsoon.

The fisherwomen say that their business is also down as the consumers who used to buy two to three kg of fish take only half or one kg because of increased price.

Its High time for modi government to make policy for fish imports for consumption. Our local fish is exported and unwanted fice sold in market for exorbitant price which is out of comon man. Hence govt should import fresh fish to level prices locally.

You are talking of importing fish? First consider this. 1. Exports have fallen sharply. Chinese made goods have saturated the Indian market, killing Indian manufacturers and rendering millions jobless. 2. Oil and Gas prices are going up and with the ongoing war in Ukraine there is a short supply of hydro carbons. 3. Investors and multi nationals are leaving India in droves pulling out billions of dollars in investments. 4. Besides foreign companies leaving India, last year over 8000 High net worth Indian businessmen (with over 10 Million dollars in asset) migrated to the West. 5. Indians going to work in the Gulf have fallen sharply, and many have returned. Hence foreign remittances have fallen too. 6. About 1.5 million Indian students overseas paying for their studies in US Dollars are taking out a big chunk of dollars, most of them will not come back and so we will see a big brain drain. 7. The government's "Make in India" policy needs to be revamped. They need to stop the flight of existing foreign capital and bring in more investors. 8. Last 2 months we have seen internal disturbances across India. Foreign exchange reserves are dwindling very fast and you want even if fish is to be imported???? By the way things are going we may all end up vegetarians again, filling our lungs with pride (oh no not Carbon monocxide), Our spirits high as we chant "Subka Saath, Subka Vikas - Jai Hind"

Cynthia, you may not have noted that fishes and crabs who thrive in areas where sewerage drains carrying human waste join the sea too eat lots of human pooh, mostly catfish and few other species, and you can literally see their skin coated yellow with pooh! BTW, in Manganauru in so many places well water gets contaminated with sewage water as sewerage lines pass very near to the wells! It's always advisable to send home well water for analysis every year to check for sewage contamination!!

Have you heard about Rock crabs, which are supposed to be a delicacy; they are actually scavengers and survive on dead, decayed food of all kinds?

Yaaahooo....very true. Dry fish do not have any health benefits. Because of dogs/human beings one and two chutney may taste but very unhealthy. 🤮🤮🤮🤮 I saw people spit there only. I used to get stomach pain if eaten in any form. Then i saw the reality. Which bhutaay big one (gujarath butaay or local one ?)

Very rarelypeople fall sick or suffer food poisoning. In Kuwait we get dried fish from India, Srilanka, Philipp well processed organically packed. Wow !

Fish does not mean Pomfret or kaane alone ..Your taste buds can be tingled by some buthai fry and some fresh bangude too which are much cheaper and delightful to eat. Nang fry is my favorite.

when meat is in short supply.... fish prices skyrocket...., more importantly this summar season lot of gulf based NRI's are visiting coastal town... obviously the lust for fish with the flavor of toddy... never stops the buyers from paying high...., obviously this will lead to economic empowerment of fishermen community in a big way.... wealth spread must be encouraged & enabled, and the political ideology supporting the third class thug cronies must be defeated & purged.

Eating dry fish curry is better than frozen ones... River fish are expensive but also can not be loved continuously day after day like fresh mackerels or sardines... Mixed fish (podi meen) are a big relief as the curry becomes fabulous...

Don't ever try to eat dry fish..... You know how they are dried up? Dogs urinate on them... I have seen dog's excreta sometimes in between and at the boundaries. I have even seen (in Mumbai) also faeces of human beings just at the sides..... Even rats/cockroaches. If you would like to eat, wash thoroughly and soak in boiling water... then squeeze nicely and fry without oil before making curry please ..🙏🙏🙏

Nature has its own checks and balances... Germs are everywhere... No one can live in a glass House... In Israel toilet water is recycled and sent as potable water... Life is much more than we can ever fathom... Fish eats rotten or dogs so called dirty the drying fish... We know in our young times salt bags outside grocery stores used to be favourite launchpad for dogs... All organic girls... Purity is in hearts...

Israel is recycling not only toilet water but also other water which is used in other forms in houses/factories..... They have advanced technologies to do the same. But, dry fish is not recycled....directly from ground where its put for drying is going to the market. I think, before cleanliness was maintained but now with the growing population/demand/growing number of street dogs and their menace and littering, no one tries to maintain cleanliness. Only aim is earning money.....You please eat.... 😋
