Mangaluru: Sand bags used to secure houses from sea erosion at Meenakaliya

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 14: Jumbo sand bags are being used to prevent sea erosion at Meenakaliya near Baikampady.

Many houses were on the verge of getting washed away in the sea due to incessant rains that have been lashing the district for the past two weeks.

The work was carried out with the help of locals.

More than 10 houses are still in danger of being washed away into the sea.

The MRPL provided the jumbo bags on request by local MLA Dr Bharath Shetty.

The electricity poles are also being relocated.

Looks like waves hit with great force. They need to see what others are doing. See what kind of wall staying strong from the last 5 years. Sea water itself has high corrosion properties, so bags may last for 2 weeks

Karnataka itself has 300km of coast line. If sea erosion becomes so common , then it is practically impossible to build permanent wall everywhere. So people need to think before settling permanently near coastline. It is huge waste tax money as well

When see erosion is there ,putting sand bags is word to word as putting in see .Instead big stones might help a bit.Better be aware and vacate the place immediately. When water is so near ,give up hopes of houses at present.Save your own life before you sink in sand .May God help you.
