Mangalore: Seminar on Urban Services , Focus on Solid Waste Mgt Enlightens Students

Mangalore, Apr 12: The city stands second in solid waste management in the country. Yet lots need to be done, many things to be attained and many barricades to be broken to handle the matter as it’s a social issue of bringing better life for everyone in the society. Mangalore City Corporation is ready to join with academic institutions, NGO’s or civil society groups for achieving the peak of solid waste management, said Dr K N Vijaya Prakash, commissioner, MCC at a two-day seminar on ‘Urban Services in Mangalore City – Focus Solid Waste Management’ organized by social change management forum and centre for sustainable development, school of social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore at the seminar hall of the college on Tuesday April 12.
He was the chief guest at the programme.
Stressing that the theme of the seminar is closely associated with the MCC, he said that he is overwhelmed after observing many academic among other institutions have come forward to focus on good governance.
He also released the book on ‘Good Governance’ authored by Dr Rita Noronha.
Dr Olinda Pereira, director, Vishwas Trust, another chief guest said that the book on good governance and the seminar on solid waste management is an effort to warm up one’s heart who were eagerly waiting to reach ‘solid concrete resolution’ by inculcating the values incorporated in the ‘Good Governance’ book.
Noemia D’Souza, president, Institute of Social Service, Roshni Nilaya in her presidential address said that waste management has turned out to be a gigantic problem predominantly in urban areas. Each one has to think upon how it can be overcome, she added.
Addressing the gathering, Adoor Krishna Rao called upon to keep a little time aside for social work. He also stated 0% solid waste is possible provided 100 % efforts are put.
Dr Rita Noronha, guest of honor, said that transparency and accountability in governance system is the need of an hour.
Dr Ashoka B, principal in charge and head, criminology department was another chief guest.
There will be technical sessions in the afternoon. Valedictory ceremony will be held on Wednesday April 13 at 4.00 pm.
