Mangalore, Apr 16: “Empowerment of women is possible only through women unions,” said senior doctor H T Manorama Rao.
She was delivering her presidential address at the centenary celebration of ‘Mahila Sabha’ on Saturday April 16.
Dr Rao congratulated the Mahila Sabha for its tenure of 100 years in empowering women through its contributions.
Inaugurating the programme, Sandhya S Pai, managing editor, ‘Taranga’, said that there is considerable difference between the problems faced by the women in India earlier and the condition prevailing now. “Even in the present generation, some women are leading a pathetic life. There is need for every women’s wing to work on the same issue,” she stressed.
“Cases of girls getting married at an early age are still reported in villages. They also face physical and mental disturbance after such marriages. The number of those who missed getting an education is notable among women. Decrease in the number of females in ratio to males is evident from the surveys. Women’s wings also have the responsibility of controlling this”, she added.
She appreciated the 100 years of service of the Mahila Sabha. MRPL deputy general manager Laxmi M Kumaran released a memento ‘Yashaswini’. Mahila Sabha president Sumathi Pangal welcomed. Joint secretary Veena Shetty delivered the vote of thanks.
