Bangalore: Kannada Glam Doll Ramya Joins Congress
Bangalore, Apr 19 (Agencies): Glam doll Ramya, who has been seeking to take the plunge into politics for a while now, joined the Youth Congress yesterday.
The actress tweeted last evening, "Became a member of Youth Congress today. Do you want to as well?"
Insiders in the party said it was a calculated move that she joined the Youth Congress, prior to Rahul Gandhi's visit to Bangalore. The youth icon is scheduled visit the city on April 21, and is expected to address members of the party.
Youthful vigour
Recently, she kicked up controversy by announcing that she would be retiring from acting in Kannada films owing to harassment by a film producer. Later, she changed her mind after the crisis was resolved.
"Right now I don't have any intention to enter active politics. I have joined the Youth Congress because it is the party of youth," she told media.
Many have criticised her move on twitter, saying she had joined a corrupt party. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see," she tweeted, "If one thinks there is corruption, he has to be the part of the system to change it."
Ramya's parents ” Narayan and Ranjitha ” are close to Foreign Minister S M Krishna.
The actress was tipped to be a Congress candidate in the last parliamentary polls from Krishna's home district Mandya, but actor-turned politician Ambarish entered the fray only to face defeat at the hands of JD(S) candidate Chaluvaraya Swamy.
