All for Rs 100: After State, Union Govt's Turn to Show 'Generosity'

New Delhi, Apr 20: Karnataka government need not feel that it is the only government to have tried to recognize and appreciate the efforts of hard working and brave fire men by doling them with a reward of Rs 100 each. Close on the heels of this news that appeared yesterday, it has become public, that Karnataka government has company in the form of the union department of railways. The railways have shown their generosity towards the railway personnel who saved 1,100 people from a catastrophe at night, by sanctioning Rs 3,000 to 30 personnel. This means that every one of these thirty railways employees will get Rs 100 each for their excellent work.
It may be recalled that a fire tragedy had occurred in Rajdhani Express train from Mumbai to New Delhi at around 2.30 am on Monday April 18. The fire, which was started by short circuit that occurred in the kitchen section of the train, spread to neighbouring compartments in seconds.

30 railway personnel, who were in the kitchen and pantry car at the time, had immediately pulled the chain. By the time the train came to a stop, they had entered the endangered compartments, woke the sleeping passengers up, and ensured that every one of these passengers safely came out of their respective compartments before fire could harm them. At the same time, they cut of the link of the compartments that had caught fire from other compartments, to ensure that fire did not spread further.
While two of the compartments of the said train were completely charred in the accident, two more were partly burnt. Miraculously, none of the 1,100 people travelling by the ill-fated train had suffered even injuries. Credit for this entirely goes to 30 kitchen staff of the train. They put their lives to stake for saving the passengers.
On Tuesday April 19, the railway officials generously announced that they would be rewarding this great work through a prize of Rs 3,000 for 30 personnel. When contacted, the officials said that the quantum of reward may go up after the investigation ordered into the tragedy concludes. They have dismissed the possibility of hiking the prize money during the pendency of investigation.
