Bangalore: Mohandas Pai Speaks Against Infosys Management

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Apr 20: T V Mohandas Pai, who has come out of Infosys after being its director HR, education and research operations, and member of the board, criticized the top brass of the IT major, Infosys Technologies Ltd, of being conservative in their approach and sticking to age old traditions. He accused the traditional approach of those who are running the company now, and their inability to appreciate change, and also for being responsible for the company having lost its past sheen.

In his interview to NDTV on Tuesday April 19, Pai felt that Infosys had to lag behind in global competition because of the traditional approach owned by its founder, N R Narayana Murthy, and his team of management. “I am worried at the fact that we are not welcoming new ideas and change. While choosing a new leader for the company, seniority can only be one of the issues to be considered, it should never be decisive. Capacity, creativity, and the transformation to be brought about in the company in the next five years should be the decisive points while selecting a new leader,” he stressed.

He said that a few people, who founded the company, took it to new heights. But later, they sat on their past laurels, always stood by what they believed, and refused to hand over the company’s leadership to new generation. He felt that the company is badly in need of young blood, and new thinking. “The people when young have revolutionary ideas. As they grow old, people tend to become traditional,” he commented.

Utterences of Mohandas Pai shows that though he occupies top post in Infosys since several years and for all what is he is today, name & fame etc is due to Narayana Murthy and Infosys, he is unbaked man.True color of a man comes out during crucial times. He must be grateful to Murthy for having brought him from a lorry transport company and elevated to the present position. He is indebted to the Infosys and not Infosys is indebted to Pai.

It is indeed astounding that the very same person Mr.Mohandas Pai who had been going gaga over Infosys and its holy values and stuff all these years in so many forums turns out speaking against them. Time makes different actors out of each of us..Is n't it ?

But yes many of our IT Companies which started in the 90s is now finding it tough to manage the bulge it has been slowly developing and what he has pointed out is indeed true..I think not everyone above 10 years can be good managers or could be monetarily lucrative for the company..Some have to be shown the door..If the company has to be profitable like it has been all these years, lot of decisive moves have to be taken else Infy could fall behind. Let us see how the 'innovative' ageing minds manage the show !!

No mattter what many of disillusioned employees / HR experts say, from investor's point of view, it is a major set back..Mohan was a leading light at Infosys and the last of the famous Trio at Infosys...No one apart from them had the brand value to add to that of the company..He was an ideal candidate to run the company as CEO...But...Founders are Flounders...it seems!

This has been a wonderful stint and of course Mr Pai had been a great leader. And it is really unfortunate to see him leave Infosys like this.
However what he fails to realize if the fact that for last so many years, the HR policies have not really been tuned up to appreciate meritocracy, problem with old employees and “longevity” problem is at all levels. In fact what he has seen after 17 years may always have been there just that he may have been relatively longer “longevity” so far. He was finally caught in this unfortunately and has realized how hard it feels, but he should also realize this happens all over the company (may not just be Infosys) and may feel it unfair now, It may be right time for some other HR leaders to maybe think about this prevalent practice and figure out how to really appreciate and reward meritocracy correctly. You can make out these unsaid policies and issues come back to bite you may be sometimes as long as after 17 years!!! :-)

So it took 17 yrs for MD pai to realize that Infy top Management is conservative and it needs newer team to grow the org. One quick question to Mr. Pai, " if you were given the position of CEO, would you have still commented the same that Infy boards new newer strengths and views.

I was suprised to read Mr.T.V.Mohandas Pai's view on Mr.Narayan Murthy, being conservative and traditional in approach. But Mr.Murthy is a true honest entrepreneur I ever seen in recent time. Surely this should not be the reason to resign from the company board.

congrats to this BRILLIANT MAN. For the last 17 years that he was involved with Infosys , it was a Fantastic company. The moment he left ( being denied the top post), it became conservative, old fashioned , etc. Maybe being loyal is old fashioned today and in this context Pai is being Modern. The founders of this great Company are indeed wise, they recognised the character of this man and his incapacity to lead and have saved their company.

Our political system has lost 5 generations of young, sharp, enthusiastic, energetic and bright minds which would have put our country ahead of 2020. We still have the old hags hanging around after 80.

It took fifteen odd years for Mr Pai to understand that the founding fathers of his organisation were conservative and never allowed new ideas to be implemented. But,surprisingly whenever I hear NRN the only mantra that he preaches for sustaining the global competition is INNOVATION. Innovation can not come unless fresh minds are infused in to the system and motivated. It sounds more of a case of sour grapes

I wonder whether he sticks to Traditional Ideas?

What Mr Pai should realize is that he did not have the requiste to lead.

Let's one accept the fact that we human beings are selfish and corrupt. I was not at all surprised the statement made by Mr. T V Mohandas Pai's interview to NDTV on Tuesday April 19,. If I would have been in Mr Pai's shoes, might be,I would have said the same.
Many times we cannot run our own house without the support of our family memebers. How can such a Conglomorate entity which has more than 10,000 staff, can run without difference of opinion. Alwalys the founders go for safe zone and decisions are made on Company to run with less risk.
New ideas with risk will run for the new sister concern, which Mr. Pai failed to incorporate with the support of the founders. God forfids, if that Company is in bad shape, then the parent Company is safe.
Wish Mr. Mohandas Pai, will continue with INFOSYS as he is very highly professional, extremly astute in his outlook and very intelligent personality.

Very valid views and well said, however he should have reserved his views until he left the organization.
Today I read somewhere that he had retracted his words.
