Bengaluru: St John’s Medical College - Graduation Day event held

Bengaluru, Mar 14: The 'Graduation Day' of St John’s Medical College, Bengaluru was held on March 10 2018 at 2.30 pm in the St John’s main auditorium. Justice Kurian Joseph, judge, supreme court of India, was the chief guest.  Fr George Antonysamy, chairman of governing board, St John's National Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS) presided over the function. A total of 240 health profesionals graduated this year, which included 61 MBBS, 69 PG degree, 13 PG diploma, 18 super specialty, 9 PhD scholars, MHA 17 and 31 BSc, 22 MSc of the Allied Health Sciences.



Justice Kurian Joseph in his address to the graduates emphasized on the motto of St John's medical college 'He shall live because of me' and the relevance of the same in today’s time. He reminded doctors that the knowledge must be translated into wisdom and this wisdom must be applied alwyas for the wellbeing of the patients. He also stressed the importance of stress management and motivated the graduates to aim to be great doctors. He also urged the parents of the graduating doctors to give these young professionals the space and time for them to bloom to be productive members of their family and society at large.

St John’s medical college started 54 years ago with the mission to train health care personnel to serve in rural and underserved areas of our country. This year nearly 40 of our graduates opted to do rural service. The college has been consistently ranked amongst the top ten colleges and this year we were ranked fourth  by the Outlook magazine.

We have consistently had very good academic results and this year was no exception. The pass rate was over 90% in all years of the MBBS. Our first batch of 150 students had a pass rate of 98%. Seven of our UG’s got university ranks in 15 subjects with Keerthana Haridas placed third overall. Fifteen postgraduates and 3 postdoctoral students got ranks. Dr Jomy Joseph stood first in MS ENT and Dr Thara Joseph was placed first in MD radio diagnosis. Seven students got university ranks in BSc MLT and Tresa Martin stood fifth overall. In MSc MLT we got 9 ranks with Maneesha Joseph securing first overall in haematology.

We are a MCI Nodal Center to train faculty from medical colleges across South India. Our faculty Dr A Kurpad, prof & head, department of Physiology and head, division of nutrition, was awarded the APCCN award for the year 2017 at the 10th Asia Pacific Conference on Clinical Nutrition held at Adelaide, in November 2017. He has been appointed to the echnical Advisory Committee under the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and cabinet to strategize and improve initiatives in ‘Nutrition’ for the country. He is also co-chairman of The DBT Task Force Committee on 'Public Health including Food & Nutritional Interventions.'

The college is supported by a state of the art 1300 bed hospital, with over 2000 outpatients visiting daily and 1000 inpatients. This year we are hosting the world bioethics conference.

Many International students choose to come to St John’s medical college as observers, to do elective postings or to work in our research labs. This year we had 620 observers and 355 elective students mainly from Europe, USA, Middle East & Ethiopia.
