Forming the Right Bonds through Coeducation

September 17, 2011

Education is not merely an attainment of intellectual life but also the ability to foster relationships. Coeducation is an important element in education sector. It helps the young minds to motivate themselves and to straighten their paths.

Why is coeducation so important? It is important, because every human being is an adventurer. He/she tries to see new things in the world and in life. It helps one to learn through healthy interaction.

If one is denied the opportunity to study in a coeducational institution, in the early stages, as the years pass on one may develop an unhealthy understanding of the opposite sex. For instance, in my coeducation in the school days, I experienced a lot of freedom and growth. I had many friends, both boys and girls. These were my closest friends, who stood by me in all my difficulties. This was a healthy relationship, which motivated me personally. On the contrary, after my schooling I joined a boys' pre-university college (PUC). I developed friendship with boys of different backgrounds. I had friends who underwent coeducation as well as those who did not. Here I observed in my fellow companions who did not have coeducation speak negatively about girls. Moreover, they were trying to seek pleasure through their description of girls. In fact, it is a human tendency.

On the other hand, those who had studied in coeducation had a positive attitude and respect towards girls. At that moment, I wondered, what could be the reason behind this?

Advantages of Coeducation

In this competitive and advanced world, coeducation is an opportunity to prepare oneself through mutual confrontation. It enables the person to grow in all aspects of life. It enhances an atmosphere of family bond, sisterly and brotherly love. Moreover, it creates a healthy relationship between the persons. I believe, through knowing  facts, we broaden our horizon. In fact, through coeducation persons become mature in their life and in their choices too.

Disadvantages

There is a possibility that persons get attracted towards each other and fantasize about sexual relationship. As human beings these thoughts are natural. Nowadays, children are exposed to post-modern culture especially through media. It may affect children in their relationships and cause havoc.

These are all psychologically connected. However, we need to use our common sense with an agile thinking to tackle the problems. For this, self-formation and motivation play a vital role in one’s life.

In fact, we are all exposed to all these advantages and disadvantages. I worry about today’s youth whose future is disoriented, due to lack of proper education. Relationships play an important role in everyone’s life. Due to lack of relationship rape, murder, abuse, flesh trade, divorces etc are on the increase. Perhaps, those who are educated without proper exposure to coeducation do these things. What a pathetic situation. What is our reaction to all these things? Are we blind to the things happening around us? We all need to rise from our slumber in order to combat these evil deeds.

Finally, I would like to open your hearts and minds with the following lines.

"We all like to see things rather than do things".
"We all like to listen to things rather than say anything".
"We all don’t like to tackle others' dilemma until it becomes our own".
"We all don’t like relationships unless they help us".

Relationship is the primary source for a better life. Therefore, I believe coeducation is the backbone to a better living.

hi shanthu...u have well expressed ur openion on the issue....though co-education is seen with a sense of suspicion even today, no doubt that it is still a better atmosphere for a personal growth provided there is open mind and understanding guide in the form of friends and teachers..

MR. MELVIN PINTO: As a school
    Principal, you could give an
    authoritative conclusion about the
positive result of a properly guided coeductional system. It is terribly sad to see that even at the 21st centuary, some school
and college Principals try to act
as if they are living in the 19th century. People of your caliber
must speak out loudly to change the
rotten and uncivilized systems in the society. Keep up the good work. Old traditions have more hold on to the society rather than rationality and cultural advancement.

Well said Shantharaj. I agree with you totally. When boys and girls get into relationships which may appear unhealthy, they are to be guided, and not discouraged. That would be real education. As a school Principal, I have found children growing in a healthier environment when it is a Co-ed school. Segregating the children is not a solution. Thanks Shantharaj for throwing more light on this issue...

Good article Mr.Shantharaj and you have expressed your personal positive opinion about the advantage/disadvantage of coeducation through this column.
It is true and I do agree that in this competitive and advanced world, coeducation is an opportunity to prepare oneself through mutual confrontation. It enables the person to grow in all aspects of life. It enhances an atmosphere of family bond, sisterly and brotherly love. Moreover, it creates a healthy relationship between the persons.More you hide more the curiosity, anxiety to know the hidden things. Therefore be open,be sincere and be practical. No doubt Coeducation definitely helps to build our personality. It removes all the negative thoughts of the mind and broaden your horizon. However one should be very cautious when you choose that is purely left to the students of both sex.If anybody really wants to understand and increase their level of understandings yes co-education is the best place where you can learn more about our life by interacting with each other. We will come to know how to mould our life and where to lead. That is up to the individual to take it or not to take.Really this is not meant for rapers, murderers, flesh traders and so on.Good article once again provided you take it in good sense.

It's not just to generalize pros and cons of coeducation by citing one or two examples and it's appalling to attribute causes of evils such as rape, murder, flesh trade, divorces to non exposure to coed.

Good article. While recollecting the education we had several decades back, it was nothing but
studying something academically but in coeducation, social and
cultural development, the end result was a big "zero". Girls and boys used to sit side by side, but the new autocratic Principal (granddaddy of Anand John Alexander who is in U.S. jail)
put the girls in the front, and the boys had to sit at the back rows, so that boys and girls won't
look at each other's face. Thank GOD, now things are improving in
the south. God has not created
both sexes to be kept in two chambers in the younger days, but to interact in a wholesome manner to have a better personality development.
