Engineering Education should Undergo Metamorphism

June 5, 2020

Engineering education in our country needs to be more far-reaching, more supple in the syllabi (presently thought in colleges), should be state-of-the-art and should be open for more alliance when compared with the present scenario. The rapid, exact immersion of learners into virtual learning during this period of COVED-19 has confirmed that engineering education is hampered but still engineering education can be more flexible during unforeseen circumstances.

Engineering education is going to be more and more digital in the foreseeable coming days and with the right kind of infrastructure and strategies in place. Covid-19 pandemic has made all engineering education system across the country to adopt for online teaching. For a country like ours, this is a golden chance to uplift the internet connectivity across rural India. Greater spiking of the telecom network and rolling out 5G services will give huge propulsion to Engineering education.

Every village and town in our country should be digitally connected for better interaction between the scholars and teachers. Institutes like IITs have ‘a sort’ of infrastructure to connect students but the other Engineering varsities still do not. India should establish a good infrastructure for online education like some of the advanced countries. The huge benefit will be of such a system is engineering education can become more international.

Now the question is whether this pandemic has created an opportunity for us in engineering education to go for transformation? The answer to this is yes, once the pandemic gets washed out of the globe or once it is under control, there will be a golden opportunity for the Engineering education system to undergo metamorphism.

In the coming days especially, engineering education varsities should not miss golden opportunities to change and they should utilize ICT to the full potential to create an advantageous position for emerging young Engineers in the country.

Engineering Varsities should work in the direction of preparing their scholars as workforce for future's rapidly changing, challenging technology-driven and knowledge-intensive working ambience. Most of us do not know that the time may come in the future such that engineering professionals should adapt themselves for work according to the situation, work online for multiple tasks and even work for multiple employers. Therefore, the engineering varsities should look for a radical change in the way they offer engineering education and mould their scholars to develop the skill sets according to the need of the industry 4.0. The experience gained from online classes, workforce-training programmes and managing of tasks and activities of the varsity during this pandemic should pave the way for redesigning Engineering education for tomorrow’s industries, corporate and business enterprises to build their scholars as strong responsible citizens of modern India.

I feel the admission procedures should be streamlined in such a manner that only students who have analytical aptitude have to be enrolled in engineering colleges...

I have been working with the global engineering team in the middle east.
South Korean fresh engineering graduates are assigned to the projects where they display all necessary skills from the day one and also they are highly disciplined.
Our engineers lack the skills at the beginning but get trained after couple of projects.
After discussing with many engineers I came to know that in Korea they are practically trained in ongoing projects during graduation itself and also compulsory military service gives an added advantage.
Bottom line is field experience must be increased during graduation plus defense exposure for a short while.

If at all now going e-learning is more successful, centre can decide to store a great resource of e-classes. We can also stop the mushrooming of engineering colleges with stintman principals.
