Beam of Light

(Foreword: She was in the 9th Standard when she attempted to end her life. Today she is a well-established young woman. This is a summation of our interaction through her beautiful eyes):

My heart was without love and void;
study they yelled, as if I was a droid.

I walked to school feeling unworthy;
why did the black board always look empty?

My father's beatings I couldn't bear;
the cries of my soul why could no one hear?
And where were those hugs my heart yearned for?

In my soul's darkness I tried to jump out the window;
my mother barely saved me as she grabbed my toe.

Why! My mother screamed in fright.
Only the window, I cried, offered a beam of light.

In God's image you are made, my counsellor said.
Why are people cruel, I asked him instead?

Love is God's highest ethic, he spent time to explain;
because of our will, we are more than a body and a brain.

I was born a loser, I declared;
not written in your genes, he prevailed.
If you don't believe you are full of worth,
you will berate yourself, he assured.

Life is not about wins or losses;
it is all about learning from our choices.
The world may mock you at your failures,
Rest assured God hates such behaviour.

Why does God love me less, I questioned?
God's immeasurable love is what you are worth;
he let that thought sink into my little heart.

He asked, if happiness came from our will;
why does it elude humanity still?

You are special is what you don't see;
he taught me to forgive and set me free.

My scores jumped from embarrassing lows;
to highs I couldn't possibly know.

It’s many years since my mother held me by my toe;
I am grateful for life has different shades to show.

I live my days without discord;
Accepting what I can’t change brings concord.

Someday like this counsellor I want to be;
for he explained life's purpose I would like everyone to see.

My life is not my own,
it belongs to the Supreme not fully known.

I affirm that God's Light is the true light;
He shines in everyone equally bright.
