Bantwal, Nov 2: An undertrial accused made an abortive bid to escape from the clutches of policemen on board a police vehicle which was transporting him to a prison. This incident happened on Thursday at Brahmarakotlu toll gate on B C Road in Bantwal police station limits in the evening.
At about 6.30 pm, the accused Girish alias Giridhar, a resident of Kalli tried to push the policemen on duty and jump from the vehicle and escape arrest. A new case has been registered against the accused by the police.
Giridhar was found wanting in a theft case of 2003 and had evaded arrest. After the police apprehended him, he was produced before a court where he was remanded to judicial custody.
The accused was being taken to Mangaluru in a government bus which had two policemen.
Policemen acted swiftly when the accused tried to escape and with the help of the locals who gave him a chase Giridhar was arrested.
