Beltangady: Suryanarayana Temple Festival Unites Christians, Hindus

Beltangady, May 12 (UCA News): A temple festival celebrated jointly by Christians and Hindus here on Wednesday May 11 has been hailed as a breakthrough in community relations.

A group of Catholics joined Hindus in celebrating the Suryanarayana Temple festival. The Temple began the annual 10-day festival on May 6. Catholic parishioners had helped renovate the temple premises for the festival. The temple officials then invited Catholics to the festival.

A local television channel hailed the event as "a new chapter and new approach toward harmonious living." It wanted all in Karnataka to follow the Naravi example.

Jeevandhar Kumar, a local leader of Jainism and temple festival committee convener, said politicians divide people along religious and caste lines. “We have transcended those petty borders,” he added.

“We do practice different religious cults and rituals. But all of us are members of one common religion of humanity,” said Fr Louis Cutinha, parish priest of St Antony Church of Naravi in Mangalore diocese.

The priest led more than 200 parishioners in the temple procession. "This festival is a great occasion to experience harmony in diversity," he said.
Christians organized a boat tableau wishing well for the festival, with its message of harmony, in a 1-km procession through the local market. The theme of the procession was, "Before God all are one."

"The role played by the Christians is really heartwarming especially in the context of communal tension around us," Father Cutinha said.

He said the Christians’ gesture helped remove earlier hesitation and a communication gap between local Christians and Hindus.

Sri Sri N Vasanth Bhat, the temple priest in Naravi, said local Christians had shown an example of harmonious cooperation.

After reading all the comments here praising Hindu- Christianity gesture I wish to point out that teh caption of the news item itself is totally wrong. It says "Suryanarayana Temple Festival UNITES Christians ,Hindus"I was surprised when it was DEVIDED in DK dist.I see Hindus and all other communities including Christians are united in the soceity since centuries. We never felt devided on any issue so far(sorrry,Mangalore church attack is not at all a related issue)This unity among various section in the soceity prevails because we are a peace ful soceity by nature and being perceived at all times inspite of political attempts to break this.So Suryanarayana Temple matter is only one among gesture that prevails. Many more events are not being published in the press.

MARK, muscat/ mangalore, what you try to say in your comments not clear to me, and why you picked my comments when you say Pope, Priests other religious leader attened the celebration of other religious festival and me attending the festival what you found wrong in that. In my comments I clearly mentioned that we attended the Hindu festivals(Celebration) and hindu weddings (neighbours) with friends. As I know my brahmin childhood friends never did any offerings or adoration in the temple nor we receive any prasada from them,my comments are clear that I am not gone to do the pujas in the temple, even in cities people attended all religious festivals of each other because we live in country where many religions live together, in Bethlehem Arabs attened Christmas mass, where I live there are many Hindus come to church and pray near the Grotto.

I am good practsing christian and I know in christianity there is no offerings to any Idols(Idol worship)we are not allowed to worship and serve what God has created, that we learn from our parents, eleders and religious leaders since our childhood, and we adore only one God the creator himslef, and I know only one God The Father,Son,Holy Spirit Three in ONE. We worship the immortal God, the creator himself, who is to be praised forever!Amen.

A group of Catholics joined Hindus in celebrating the Suryanarayana Temple festival. Clara Lewis, Kemmannu/Dubai. Nothing wrong in attending or cecebration. (But in chritianity and muslim ( example) adoration and offering to other gods is not posible. The Ten Commandments, or Decalogue.) But sometimes priests and bishops, or even (pope attend mosque)observeing other peoples faith is not wrong. You see in jerusalem ALL over the world people visit western wall /Wailing Wall ,pray their own god. ( chritian- christ, jews holiest place) Christian faith is -chriest is light, i am the gate, (enter main gate) etc.
    2. Here we have to respect all religion and all people equally.

Great example from both the religious leaders to unite both the religious people to live in peace and harmony. Hope to see other religious people will join in the future to maintain peace and harmony among all communities. Majority people in India are very tolerant, politicians divide people to serve their own selfish motives.

In our childhood we attended most of the Hindu festivals/weddings in the temple with our friends. We lived close to temple and our neighbours were from Brahmin to Schedule caste Hindus.

we used to live near a Alami mosque..the Sufi folks used to participate in Hindu celebrations and vice versa...this practise lasted for a long time...then there weren't much Sufi people...the practise stopped for reasons not known ..may be by some folks who didn't like this harmony. Thanks to all who cooperated in this wonderful show of unity of faith. This shows the fabric of our society..one god..one humanity..Amen!

Thank you Daiji for the post. It is nice to see / read of religious harmony between Christians and Hindus in Naravi (I can see some familiar faces in pic # 1, 5 & 10). Harmony and mutual respect is the only way by which different religious communities can live together side by side in peace.
