Mangalore, May 16: Due to lack of co-ordination between police and district medical officer, the process of eye donation got delayed at District Wenlock Hospital mortuary on Monday May 16. However, things got sorted out well before the eyes could have been rendered unfit for donation.

Y Dayanand Kini (49), resident of Yekkar under Bajpe police station limit and son of Manjunath Kini suffered a heart attack on Monday morning at 8 am and soon a call was made to 108 for ambulance service. The ambulance arrived 45 minutes late and the patient died on the way. The deceased is survived by wife, son, and two daughters.

Dayanand’s younger brothers Prabhakar Kini, Vinayak Kini and Rajesh Kini and son who were at the mortuary were made to wait unnecessarily. When the family members requested the DMO Bharathi Nirmal in Wenlock to quicken the procedure of eye donation, she said as the death occurred in 108 ambulance, postmortem of the body needs to be undertaken. But the already tensed son and daughter somehow wrote a requisition letter suggesting their wish for donating their father’s eyes as it was his pledge.

Bajpe police station ASI who conducted an interrogation of the son of the deceased later gave his consent for eye donation after the DMO gave her consent. As Kini died young, his eyes were safe to donate.

The brothers of the deceased alleged that even though police and the DMO in the hospital were clearly informed about the urgency of their desire to donate eyes, they took their own time with an inspection making the family run from one desk to another and speaking harshly to them.

Later the doctors conducted the postmortem and simultaneously removed the eyes. Thus extraction of the eyes became successful and the corneas became a boon for life for two persons. The relatives in their grief too, expressed their sense of gratitude for the media people, who helped fulfill the desire of the deceased which was their desire too.

It is a matter of concern as in this case when people come forward for such a noble cause like eye donation, the rules and policies should be favourable and easy for the donors. Only such a move will help increase such noble works.

Congrats to Kini's kin-who showed great sense of donation(sacrifice) even at the time of tragedy, so that 2 people will get eyesight.
But RED TAPISM in our country is not letting even the dead to have their wishes fulfilled or obstructing to get something in return.

Its sad that a person who made a pledge for noble cause had to wait, even after his death. As it is none will take up this measure of donation. But when does so, they get to run from pillar to post. Making eye donation is a sin ?? Wenlock hospital has a real bad reputation and the staff seems to act as like their are the owners of the hospital. Infcat govt. hospital are built for easy solution and immediate attendance, but in turn, it never happens. I have lost one of my friend loosing his life at wenlock, while he was bleeding heavyly and needed immediate attendance. Due to the ignorance from the staff, he has no other choice than to say good bye to his world, leaving his family back. Had he been given immediate aid, then possibly he would have survived today. Due to this people opt for private hospitals, who in turn loot people. Off course another group of documentation is the local police.
