Kundapur, Nov 27: Rice meant to be distributed through Anna Bhagya scheme was found to be sold illegally in the open market at Santhosha Nagara of Hemmady village in the taluk.
Based on a tip-off food inspector Suresh and police waylaid a goods vehicle on the night of November 25 at the bend of national highway which leads to Santhosha Nagara. Police found 24 bags filled with rice and 40 empty plastic bags.
On inquiry, driver Vijaya T Poojary (39) of Badakere, said that the rice collected by Ayub, a resident of Santhosha Nagara from villages was to be delivered to Firoz, a resident of Kodi. Accordingly, driver Vijaya was transporting the rice to Maravanthe to be delivered to Firoz.

When the 24 bags were weighed, the weight was found to be 1000 kg, the estimated value of which is Rs 22, 000. The value of the confiscated goods vehicle is Rs 1.30 lac.
Kundapur police have registered a case and are probing further.
