Udupi: Protesters term collection of double toll at Hejamady gate illegal

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Dec 29: “Approximately Rs 400 crores has been collected as toll at Surathkal toll gate during the last seven years. Out of that only Rs 250 crores had been utilised to construct the road. The double engine government is collecting money this way for which the MP and MLAs here are directly responsible,” said Munir Katipalla.

Addressing protesters in front of the taluk office in Bannanje on Thursday, December 29 he urged the National Highway Authority of India officials to permanently withdraw the orders of the highway authority to collect the illegal toll of closed Surathkal toll gate at Hejmady toll gate and to declare Surathkal Nantur highway as toll free.

Members of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi toll gate Virodhi Horata Samithi and various other organizations staged protests in front of taluk office against the double levy of toll at the Hejamady.

“Though the government called several meetings regarding vacating of Surathkal toll gate, the irresponsible MP and the MLAs in the twin districts did not participate in them and instead of stopping the collection of toll at Surathkal it has been merged with the Hejmady toll gate. The collection of toll has been postponed temporarily as elections are approaching. But the people are anxious that the collection of Surathkal toll is likely to be resumed after the elections. Large scale protests will be held in the future if that happens,” he said.

Congress block president Ramesh Kanchan said that the collection of toll has been suspended for the time being. “Rnergy minister Sunil Kumar has released a statement that tolls will not be collected at Hejmady from vehicles with Udupi registration numbers. It should be converted into an order. Protests will be held if otherwise,” he said.

“People of both the districts need to raise their voices to permanently withdraw the order to collect Surathkal toll at Hejmady. The discrepancies that have occurred due to the irresponsibility of MP and the MLAs need to be set right,” he said.

There were heated arguments between the protesters and the police personnel at this juncture. Slogans against the MP and MLAs of the twin districts were raised throughout the protests.

Fr Martis. Shanker Kunder, Vaman Bangera, Faniraj, former president of the municipal council Anandi, Sunder Master, Nagesh Udyavar, Kushal Shetty, leaders of various organisations and people took part in the protests.

Dear Sampath, I agree with your logic. However; are you aware of the rules about the minimum distance between each toll gate? Don't you think its violation of the rules by having toll gates within 20-25 kms? They made such rules with some kind of logic behind it. Think ...

Guys ... protestors should understand that India is growing and one should increase the salary at the same phase to overcome such issues....if you lag behind then protest is the only option left for you..... Building infrastructure is not very asy thing.... imagine...just 20 years ago the conditions of the roads were not that great ..be happy that now we have world class roads around us and we can travel quickly and it saves fuel too due to lack of congestion and smooth roads ...i suggest to use public transport if you are unable to pay the money... protest would supress the progress of the region ... remember it....

One recommendation for governments could be to use tax revenues, such as the goods and services tax (GST) and other taxes, to fund the maintenance and improvement of roads and other infrastructure, rather than relying on toll fees. This could potentially provide a more stable and predictable source of funding for infrastructure projects, and could also help to reduce the financial burden on commuters and local businesses. In order to implement this recommendation, governments may need to carefully evaluate the availability of alternative funding sources and the potential impact on other programs and services.

They are utilising GST while constricting the Road....But for maintaining it Toll booths are the only option and it is right because he or she is using the service and should pay for it....It's like use and pay public toilets....no point in burdening same GST or IT payers for maintenance... Governments are already spending crores to poor people and constitution is providing all kind of benifits and reservation...and there are better public transport so don't see any problem here ...

I agree that one who is using the road must pay for it. But have you really travelled on indian roads ? why dont you take a ride on the roads and judge yourself about the conditions of the roads? why even after collecting the toll the road can't be maintained? How do you justify this? there is not even one single road that can be found without path holes. So many people are dying due to accident on the two wheelers due to path holes. People can not afford the 4 wheeler so they ride on 2 wheeler, but the road condition is so bad. The public transport is over crowded. Why the govt can not put more buses with good facilities. Even i would love to travel by public transport. Ok, what about connecting to the interior places which has to be dependent on the rickshaw. Are our rickshaw fares are reasonable? how one is bellow poverty line or middle class can afford for the high rickshaw fares? How do you expect elder people or disable people to walk certain distance after getting down from highway? Please use your brain and understand the real difficulties faced by common man before you post anything to claim that " whatever the govt does is right".
