Mumbai, Jun 11 (IANS): Several areas of Mumbai and Thane were waterlogged as heavy rains lashed the city for the third consecutive day Saturday.

According to a weather department official, Colaba (south Mumbai) recorded 95.6 mm of rainfall while Santacruz (in the western suburbs) recorded rainfall of 166.6 mm in the last 12 hours till Saturday evening. The eastern suburbs received 45.8 mm rain in the 12 hours endign Saturday evening.

Many areas including Parel, Hindmata, Milan Subway, Worli, Dadar, Santacruz, Andheri, Malad, Kandivli, Ghatkopar and Vikhroli faced heavy waterlogging, causing inconvenience to people.

Many arterial roads too were blocked, causing traffic snarls. Road traffic had to be diverted through alternative routes due to water-logging in low-lying areas of the city. Local train services too were running late by 10 minutes, officials said.

Most flights to and from Mumbai also saw a delay of 15-30 minutes owing to poor visibility. The visibility at the airport was only 900 metres during the heavy downpour.

According to the weather department officials, intermittent rains were expected in various parts of the city. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also being forecast in some parts of the city Sunday.

The temperature has also dropped considerably from a minimum of over 31 degrees Celsius Thursday to 25 degrees Celsius Saturday.

As usual, Nayak mama goes to political comments.
Unplanned constructions across India is the root cause of all these problems. This applies not only to metros but also tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Readers can refer to Daijiworld for these facts relating to Bangalore and Mangalore also.
We all should ask 'accountability' from our elected representatives and babus who should ensure proper civic eminities for the money spent from tax (not only IT) payers contribution.

ALL MONEY SANCTIONED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MUMABI ARE DEPOSITED IN SWISS BANK .

DURING ELECTION CONGRESS LEADERS CLAIMED THAT THEY WILL DO MUMABI AS EQUAL TO SHANGHAI.

BUT MUMABI IS NOW WITH CLOGGED DRAINAGE, FLOODED ROADS, WATER LAKES IN RAILWAY STATION.

EVEN FOR A DRIZLING MUMABI ROADS ARE FLOODED, DRAINGES ARE CLOGGED , STINKING EVERYWHERE, RAILWAY TRACKS ARE SUBMERGED UNDER WATER.

CONGRESS LEADERS ARE MAKING MUMBAI AS SLUM CITY RATHER THAN SHANGHAI.

JESSY SLADHANA & OTHER PSUEDOS CAN YOU EXPLAIN ABOUT SLUM & SHANGHAI.

    JAI HO MUMBAI.

    Dear Rudolf Rodrigues, Bantwal/Mumbai

But what to do about the drainage of mumbai? The last time i went to mumbai was about 15 years ago, and that time itself, i found the city's garbage and drainage conditions deplorable! People in certain areas were pooping on the streets left, right, and center. And the stink was unbearable. Could not even enjoy my vada pav because of the stink of excreta everywhere. Maybe these rains will wash everything down to the arabian sea. But i feel ucckkk when i see those people walking in water clogged streets. Imagine the poop floating everywhere and touching the feet...ucckk

The flash floods are inevitable during the first rains. Drainage system has considerably improved over the years. It is the errant public who is to be blamed who dump garbage and non degradable material in the nullahs and drains and get them choked, BMC is doing a good job. Mumbai is not comparable to Mangalore (which is still a big town) in any way. Mumbai's population density is the highest in the world. More than 1.25cr people nestled in such a small area. Any other city with heavy rainfall would fall on its knees in a small time, but the beauty of Mumbai is it still runs 24x7 with clock work precision (the dabbawallas are a big example). It is a totally different city. I have experienced both Mangalore and Mumbai and there is nothing like Mumbai!!!!!

Due to heavy demand for homes in cities like Mumbai and Bangalore, we uproot the trees and clean the forests, downsize hills, and build high rise buildings in water canals as well. So it is normal that water will flow from all direction in the cities.

City planning committee must stop cutting trees, forests and should not allow to build on water canals, which allows the smooth flow. So ultimate blame rests on authorities who grant permits. They are paid to bear such responsible jobs as such cannot fail to innocent citizens

Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai / Mapusa you didnt say Mumbai is No.1 city in the world, but last time when there was similar type of havoc in Bangalore, few people commented that Mumbai is better than Bangalore as they are not facing such type of havoc. What do you say now?? Now forget it this type of havoc shouldn't take place anywhere whether in BJP ruled govt or congress ruled govt. I have seen last time when Bangalore was facing such type of havoc you commented like anything. So next time before commenting on Bangalore please remember this news and then comment.

Vincy , please don't blame governemnet or BMC or Mumbaikar. BMC has constructed drainage channels at many muncipal wards and cleaning of garbage doen well advance. The low lying areas of Mumbai affected by rains due to topographical problems. We Mumbaikars feel that this is part of mumbai life.

@vincy, shamboor/bangkok it's the nature of Kangress support commentators when something goes wrong put it other political party people. When something happens good Kangress trying to take the credit of that even though Kangress is not responsible for that.

@walter pereira, Mangalore i agree with you. We cannot blame politicians everytime, because sometimes we have to blame public also. Few people usually throw unwanted things in the gutter instead of dustbins provided by corporations which will result in such type of havocs.

This happens to Mumbai every monsoon season. I do not think that BMC should be held entirely responsible for this. The citizens of Mumbai must contribute by not throwing garbage, plasic bags etc that choke the drains.
For this and other reasons, I moved from Mumbai to Mangalore about 10 years back.
However, Mangalore is also slowly getting as bad as Mumbai!!.

Rain and flood on roads means there is no proper drainage system in the richest city of India. Thus the nature reminds and warn the habitants that they should not dump garbage on roads which further flows and blocks the drain holes. The people in mumbai never learned to keep mumbai clean even though they had so many floods in last few years. The multicrore rich city in India has filthy and dirty roads and on the other hand rich industrialists and film stars live there without raising this issues. The poor people in Mumbai made this film stars rich overnight but these stars did very less for the mumbai society. If they wish the city could have been better than shanghai city.

The bollywood people have so much money and if they use even 10% of that, they can turn mumbai a clean and beautiful city.Do not put the blame on the BMC,they cannot do much as long as politics involved. But the people can do a lot in mumbai. The major chunk of chawl people do not pay tax but blame the BMC for water shortage and flooding.
