Bangalore, Jun 15: Kanara Entrepreneurs (KE) will organize a network meeting on Friday June 17 at 6:30 pm at The Grand Magrath Hotel, Magrath road, Bangalore.

Dr Anthony V Pais, who turned 54 last October, is an MBBS, MS in general surgery from Kasturba Medical College. He was awarded FICS in Surgical Oncology in 2000 based on his surgical oncology experience by the International College of Surgeons, Washington DC, USA.

He has over 27 years of experience, of which he has spent 21 years as a surgical oncologist with Tata Memorial Hospital, KIDWAI Memorial Institute of Oncology, Manipal Hospital, St John’s National Academy of Medical Sciences and King Fahad Specialist Hospital, Dammam, KSA.

At present, he is a senior consultant - breast oncology unit, head of the department of surgery-academic affairs, Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center, Narayana Hrudayalaya Health City, Bangalore.

He has conducted several cancer detection camps for the underprivileged and for BBMP workers, throughout Karnataka. Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center is the only center in Karnataka recognized by the government of Tamil Nadu for cancer treatment under the Kalaignar Scheme. About 60% of his patients are below poverty line. Under his guidance and direction, they have done the maximum number of breast cancer resections with immediate micro vascular reconstructions in India (state of the art surgery done in the US) for the poorest of the poor.

He is the convener and examiner for MBBS course to Bangalore University; MGR University, Madras; and is also an examiner for MS to Rajiv Gandhi University of Medical Sciences and Kasturba Medical College, MAHE Deemed University. He is a professor and a member of various oncology associations.
 
He has published over 14 papers and has 16 presentations to his credit. He has delivered 44 lectures at various hospitals and centers.

In his talk, Dr Anthony V Pais will be covering 'Cancer and You' with special emphasis on breast cancer.

Cancer is nothing new. Egyptians mentioned about it in 3000 BC-Egyptian Seven Papyri. Edwin Smith Papyrus described eight tumors of the breast and suggested that no treatment was possible except for the” fire drill”.

But what is surprising is that till date, we have not achieved much in early detection and prevention of cancer.

Today we have 14 million cases worldwide and 70% of them are in developing countries. In India we see 2.5 million cases per year. Eight lac new cases and 5.5 lac deaths, due to cancer, 70 % of them are in an advanced stage.

What is cancer?

It is a disease where a cell becomes a vagabond and does what ever it likes and with no control on behavior and multiplication. As expected it lives at the expense of others and here it is the host

Myths about cancer

Cancer is contagious
Mental condition does influence the course of the disease
No pain means = no cancer
If you touch the tumor it spreads
Chemotherapy is painful
Nausea and vomiting always occurs
Pain killers - avoid them because of addiction
You can wait - pilgrimage first
 

Advantage:

Looking at the brighter side, we are fortunate that 70-80% of the common cancers in India can be detected easily and are curable in the initial stages and that is the reason why we should have regular checks like the way we look after our vehicles (servicing at regular intervals).

The programme is one of its kind being organized by KE (Bangalore chapter) for the benefits of its members, followed up with network meeting and fellowship dinner. The programme is free for all members. Guests shall be admitted with entry fee of Rs 800 per head.
