Mangalore, Jun 20: The death of Saritha, a final year BCom student in University College at Hampanakatta was condoled by the students and lecturers of the college here on Monday June 20. Saritha committed suicide by immolating herself on Sunday June 19. The girl was a resident of Barebail, Yeyyadi in the city.

The procession led by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) was taken out from the college campus to deputy commissioner's office wherein they later submitted an appeal to the DC.

ABVP leaders requested the DC to convene a meeting of all bus conductors and drivers in order to check their biodata and also convene a meeting with them on monthly basis.

Principal of the college Narayana Bhatta H R said that a counseling system is in place in the college wherein a group of teachers hold counseling for students in case of any personal problems ranging from financial to emotional. He regretted that Saritha did not give any written complaint to her lecturer on the alleged sexual harassment meted out to her by a certain bus conductor. He also said that youth should not get bogged down by emotions all the time, but face certain incidents with courage.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashwini who was the deceased's benchmate said that Saritha was a brave and silent girl. Ashwini also said that due to eve-teasing by one of the bus conductors, she always accompanied her. She recollected Saritha saying that the conductor was of dark complexion.

Another friend of Saritha, Romi said that she was scared despite her friends accompanying her. Saritha had also informed her friends that the conductor was supported by other four associates in eve-teasing.

"I saw her last on Saturday," she added.

A case unnatural death has been registered at Kadri police station. Postmortem report is expected to be out in 10 days.

I didnot see you commenting on that matter when the news about that was published in this website, but in this case how come you are blaming any organizations or religion that too without knowing any truth?? Remember good and bad people are there in all the relgions. Would request you not to bring politics in this matter. This is a very sad incident happened here. Please pray for the soul of Saritha.

Public travelling by bus should unite and take immediate action when they see such stupid actions(activities)happening in front of their eyes in the bus to pull down such bus staff off the bus and beat him in the public so that he will never try to do this anymore. Today it is SARITHA tomorrow it may be someone from our family who becomes a prey of EVE TEASING.

I completely agree with u avani. Even i have been travellign in bus from my childhood. Every girl that is born undergoes such situations at every step may be in buses,at theor neighbourhood or schools and colleges. But i would say it depends on the strength and being brave at that time!Like kavita even we all have small weapons but its only that we have to use them at the right time!Bearing is not accepted in this generation coming out and shouting neither helps!

Its good when there is a atmosphere set at home by parents so that girl feels to talk out every torture big or small she is going thru! else it happens to reach a level where it becomes intolerable and mind stops working infront of the wonderful life! Girls wake up its not the time to shy and sit behind and let others ruin ur life its time to raise and be bold and fight. If a girl can handle the whole family then she can handle the outside world too in a much better way..

Almost all bus conductors and drivers in and around mangalore take it granted to misbehave with girls . Infact most of them get into this profession only for this purpose after failing in every other field. Police departments should depute undercover officers on city busses to cath them redhanded . If any bus staff misbehaves , then their permits should be immedeately cancelled so that the owners will take necessary precautions to protect women. The possibility of introducing special busses on certain routes for "ladies only "with female staff should also be studied .

This incident reminded me of our time in college. We underwent these situations, and even worse. We protected ourselves by the pair of needles and safety pins. We found it a shame to voice this then, coz teasing is a small thing. If we had complained to our parents they would have either said 'you are giving them a chance to speak' or 'just ignore them'.
This isn't so easy to ignore. It hurts emotionally. Its a worst situation. Parents please support your girls before its too late.

We need to understand the sentiments of girls especially Indian girls. They tolerate to some extent these teasing etc. bcse of the basic shy and fearful nature. They are afraid of retaliation if they resist aggressively. Initially due to teen age they also may enjoy the teasing upto certain limit. But when the same crosses certain limit they suffer from within without able to disclose anybody due to coercion or some other trapping technique by the person at fault. Noraml response by parents to their daughters bringing such complaints is "you just ignore him, why you look at him or why you talk to him" etc.

The counselling should start at colleges when these girls' join with the parents. Why there are no teacher-parents meating at college levels like in schools wherein such issues can be discussed? If we really think lot of changes could be brought to the present education system. College adminstration should initiate. Lastly, I am surprised that no body knows who the harrasing conductor is, even her close friends. I do not tbink she is alone traveeling by that bus everyday.

This is a very shocking news to
read. Let her soul rest in peace.

A vast majority of the girls are
    lighthearted and they are totally
    afraid of revealing their mental
torture even to their own parents created by other human animals.

Every college must have a few
    counselors to help the students
with such kind of problems. Also,
    those trouble making personalities
need to get some counseling after
    punishing them for their crimies.
The culprit at this case must
    be liable for murder.

My condolences to the girl's family.
The condition of buses in mangalore city is quiet pitiable.Though there are numerous buses to every destination, the morning and evening times are extremely crowded. The students standing on footboard and clinging to the window grills are a common scene. The constant breaks by the speeding drivers, poor condition of the roads and absolutely no breathing space in the bus makes it all easy for the eve teasers to have thier way in the milling crowd.
It must have been very embarrassing to face the the erring conductor on a regular basis during her journey.
The authorities need to take serious action so that such cases may nt repeat. Colleges need to check with students on such cases and submit collective complaints against erring people.

    Dear Sir,

The conductor who was eve-teasing should be punished by giving him death by the court. So others will be scared to do it next time. So i hope Saritha s friend Ashwini should show that conductor and put him to prison. Please do follow otherwise next it will be difficult for the girls even to walk on the roads. Take serious action.

Please dont close the case by telling unnatural death.
