M'lore: Media Urged to Become More Responsible, Effective on Journalism Day

Mangalore, Jul 1: Under the joint auspices of DK district working journalists’ union (DWJU) and Mangalore Press Club, Journalism Day was celebrated at the Press Club here on Friday July 1.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel who inaugurated the programme said that the overall development of the nation depends on the supportive pillars of the society, that is, the media. Media has a crucial role to play whenever things go wrong in the system, he added, and said that there was need for the media to sustain its credibility in the competitive world.

In his address, Udayavani Mangalore Bureau Chief Manohar Prasad said that the media had a crucial role to play in India's freedom struggle, however, now they have the responsibility to safeguard the system in the country. The basic requirement in any journalist is observation, accuracy, language skills and aptitude, he said. Journalists are like honeybees who collect nectar from various flowers to add to their beehive that is eventually for the benefit of others, he pointed out. He advised the journalists to provide effective information to the public and generate awareness and help in uplifting the deprived classes in the society.

Narendra Rai Derla, a lecturer speaking on ‘Abhyudhaya Patrikodyama’ said that self analysis, commitment and satisfaction are the three main needs of a journalist. Media should be a 'voice of the voiceless' and their reports should be a reflection of the public's thoughts, he added. Derla expressed his disappointment in the media saying that they had so far failed to represent the rural areas and agriculture sector in the country.

A blood donation camp was held after the programme.

DWJU president P B Harish Rai and general secretary Srinivas Nayak Indaje among other journalists were present.

    Media plays an important role in our community, our country and the world. Media is the mouth-piece of all that is taking place in our daily life. In a country such as India where prevails abundance of freedom, democracy, languages and cultures, the media has a tremendous role to portray the facts and figures as accurately as possible without any bias for relegion, gender or culture.

    Local newspapers such as Udayavany, Nawabharatha, Madras Mail, Times of India, Deccan Herald, Maathrabhoomy, and even Rakno and Mithr have contributed a great deal and have played an important role in our daily wellfare in life. The Editorials have been very valuable and the daily coverage has been extensive.

    India, as far as media is concerned is portrayed as an exemplary nation of diversity added with quality and taste that suits all kinds of rich and poor, young and old, regardless of the faiths and beliefs.

    We therefore wish best of success for the freedom of press in India, and for all the democratic values that we so richly possess. Our civilization and our education is fully reflected upon our media quality, and India has the "best of the best" in all languages and cultures. Thank you.
