Sullia, Apr 10: The residents of Aramanegaya and surrounding villages have decided to boycott the upcoming legislative assembly elections due to the lack of a bridge to cross the rivulet in Aranthodu village, Sullia taluk. The village, which is represented by six-time MLA and minister S Angara, has been demanding a bridge for over 30 years.
The existing wooden bridge, which is the only means of crossing the rivulet, is frequently damaged during the monsoon season. As a result, villagers are forced to take an alternate route to reach the town, which is five kilometers away. During the rainy season, this alternate route is extended to 15 kilometers, causing inconvenience to school and college-going students and residents alike.
Parents of young children are particularly concerned about the safety of the existing wooden bridge. The lack of a bridge has also prevented the construction of essential infrastructure in the area, leaving the condition of the villagers in a pathetic state.
Local resident Tejakumar, speaking to daijiworld.com stated that they have been submitting memorandums for several years to demand a bridge, but the political representatives have failed to materialize the demand. As a result, the villagers have decided to boycott the polls. They have put up hoardings and bills around the village with the message "Aramanegaya Sethuve Bedike Ideruvathanaka Namma Maneya Mudina Ella Mathadana Bahishkara".
The lack of basic infrastructure in the village is a cause for concern, and the residents hope that their boycott will draw attention to their plight and prompt the authorities to take action.
