Mangalore, Jul 7:
Speaking up for the street vendors who have been at the receiving end of the MCC's eviction drive, as many as 200 people formed a human chain from Lady Goshen hospital area to State Bank and later protested in front of the DC’s office to condemn ‘Operation Tiger’ here on Thursday July 7 at 3.30 pm.

This long-standing protest of over two months has gained the support of leaders from three political parties viz Congress, JD(S), and CPI(M). Various social activists and members of 25 other unions also joined hands to form a long human chain from Lady Goshan to State Bank. The protestors included women and children who shouted slogans against the Mangalore City Corporation.

Speaking on the occasion Ramanath Rai said that the protest has been intensified in the city and the result will soon be palpable. He flayed the BJP-led MCC administration and said providing facilities only to rich people and neglecting the poor class is dangerous to the social system. He urged the MCC to allow street vendors to carry out their business by putting an end to Operation Tiger.

B Madhava of CPI(M) said that evicting those who are struggling for their daily bread is going against social justice. He said MCC which had promised that the ‘mess’ will be solved in 15 days has missed the deadline and added that the anti-people approach of the MCC has become the talk of the town.

M G Hegde, state secretary of JD(S) said that when a delegation met governor H R Bhardwaj, he was furious with Operation Tiger and had promised to take action. Administrative decisions should be taken by considering the lower strata of the people and not just the rich, added. He noted that the MCC had breached the law by not auctioning seized goods from street vendors, and though application had been submitted under the RTI provision, no answer has yet come from the MCC administration.

Leaders like MLA Ramanath Rai, social worker Rita Noronha, former mayors Shashidhar Shetty, K Ashraf, CPI(M) leader B Madhava among others were present.

All major cities in India have this menace of Street Vendors.
We cannot do away with these people because their goods and services are affordable.
Mumbai has sorted out this problem to some extent in a professional way.
    1. Mark out busy areas which are exclusive “NO HAWKING ZONE”.
    2. Construct shopping zones exclusive for street vendors.
    3. Every vendor will be given a small shop of approximate 50 sq. feet in this complex.
    4. These shops will be sold / rented to these street vendors at a subsidized rate.
    5. MCC can allow street vendors in non busy zones only after they pay for a daily hawking ticket.
We cannot rob these street vendors of their daily bread.

Street Vendors are keeping the streets dirty . If the fruits and Vegetables are rotten they dont throw it away in the Garbage container but leave it on the street to rotten and stink .How will people walk? Hampankatta /State Bank area is stinking 365 Days . I totally feel that MCC should give these people an alternative arrangement and charge them a fee and not allow them to sell these fruits and vegetables on the roads . The street vendors sit near the garbage containers and sell fruits and vegetables. It is openly noticed by people .

why doesn't the MCC take some step to provide the street vendors with some small PETTY SHOP'S put up neatly in a row which will not disturb the beauty of the city and looks disciplined also, for a reasonable DAILY RENT BASIS.Then if the vendors don't follow the discipline should be punished.Lot of poor families earn their daily bread and their dependents may have to starve if the MCC is taking such harsh steps."OPERATION TIGER IS NOT A SUCCESSFUL IDEA"

While appreciating the stand taken by the MCC for evicting the street vendors in the name of cleaning the city by means of what is called as operation Tiger,it is also highly deplorable/pathetic to see how poor street vendors are being tortured/butchered/harassed without making any alternatives, for these poor vendors. That is the only means of income to them to support and feed their families.Promises made in the past have been remained only on the papers not in action. After all they too are human beings like others and got all the rights to live gracefully in this beautiful planet earth regardless of their economic background.Don't act rudely on them.
I shall therefore urge all the concerned departments, authorities to stop all these atrocities, barbaric action on poor vendors and make some other alternatives for them so that they can live peacefully without any fear.
Hope my plea will be listened/heard by the concerned and remedial steps will be taken soon.

These haves not Street vendors begging MCC to allow them to have their daily meals from petty business! But with out making alternative arrangement MCC forced them to come to the street.BJP leadership of Mangalore/State need to consider "COMPASSIONATE GROUND" here not Yeddy's family for Z category sites in Mysore. The 'ARNYA RODHANA' of these poor petty businessmen's will not reach poor Yeddy or concerned!

Three political parties are joining together for a cause is appreciated.

These roadside shacks are not only eyesores in our cities, but also very unhygienic. Contrary to popular belief, these are not owned by poor or the needy, rather owned by "powerful and the mighty" but merely rented out. Neither they generate any income to the municipality/ corporation, they snatch business from the regular shops which have to get licenses from many departments, pay taxes...They create lot of litter, which ultimately has to be cleared by the municipality!
