Inflated power bills in Karnataka infuriate people: Cong, BJP indulge in blame game

Bengaluru, Jun 13 (IANS): The Congress government in Karnataka and opposition BJP are passing the buck on each other as people expressed outrage over inflated electricity bills.

Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday stated in Shiggaon city that power tariff was not raised during his tenure. However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah claimed that power tariff was raised during the BJP government in the state.

Talking to reporters, Bommai stated that the power tariff was not hiked during the BJP government's tenure. "The KERC is a statutory body. Though it proposed a hike in power tariff in March, we had not agreed. We had not increased power tariff. Electricity fare has been raised after the Congress government came to power," Bommai claimed.

"The power tariff has been increased in April. This is a huge burden. The power sector is going to face a crisis in the coming days. The transport and power sector should be granted funds, it won't work if subsidies are given after a year," he said.

"If power and transport sectors are not given funds and managed efficiently, the buses will stop plying and there will be no power," Bommai added.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had claimed on Sunday that as per the recommendation of the previous BJP government, the electricity tariff has been increased. "However, the BJP is spreading lies that we have increased the electricity rates," Siddaramaiah claimed.

Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) revised the power tariff on May 12. According to KERC order, power tariff was revised to average 70 paise per unit for all household connections in the state and the order was given retrospective effect from April, 2023 consumption.

Due to the revision of the tariff, an enhanced average 70 paise per unit will be collected in June bills, said Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) Managing Director Mahantesh Bilagi. "We have been forced to implement this order," he said.

Since this order was passed with retrospective basis from April 1, 2023, arrears will be collected in the June bill. The KERC also ordered for fixation of tariff in two slabs. According to the order, for consumption of the first 100 units, the revised energy charge is Rs 4.75 per unit and if consumption crosses 100 units, the energy charge is Rs 7 per unit. The consumer has to pay a flat Rs 7 per unit if consumption crosses 100 units.

Before tariff revision, energy charges were fixed in three slabs. According to earlier energy charges, for consumption of the first 50 Units, the energy charge was Rs 4.15 per unit, for consumption of another 50 units, the energy charge was Rs 5.6 per unit and for consumption beyond 100 units, energy charges were fixed at Rs 7.15 per unit, Bilagi said.

The KERC also revised fixed charges. For 1 to 50 KW sanctioned load, the fixed charge is Rs 110 and above 50 KW sanctioned load, fixed charge will be Rs 210. According to Tariff Regulation Notification 2006 of KERC, all ESCOMs should file applications for seeking revision of tariff in the month of November every year.

Infuriated with power tariff hike, many across the state are challenging authorities that they won't pay the electricity bill, come what may.

People who used to get Rs 800 bill will now have to pay up to Rs 2,400.

The situation is proving to be a roadblock for the Congress government which wants to get maximum mileage out of the Griha Jyothi scheme under which it is providing free 200 units of power to all households.

KARNATAKA POWER SCENARIO -- 51% of our installed capacity comes from RE sources such as solar, wind and cogeneration. Another 12% comes from hydro resources and 3% from nuclear sources. Only about 34% of our energy requirement is met by the thermal plants,--- With depreciation and cost control -- renewable energy purpose apart from being environment friendly -- is a non recurring cost -- except some maintenance -- regarding hydro -- getting power from water basically -- only if rains fail there is problem -- REGARDING -- THERMAL -- Thermal -- there is imported coal being bought from Adani group -- already this is in public domain why imported -- India has large reserves of coal -- imported coal very costly -- Still since thermal is only 34 % -- why overall energy basket costs going up --

The increase in power tariff was instituted during the Bommai Government s tenure. It includes ₹ 1.49 in arrears and two 70 paise increases on April 1 and June 1 which was decided earlier. Many people are asking why the hike can’t be rolled back by the current government. It can’t be rolled back because the tariff hikes are decided not by the Government but by the KERC. Governments don’t have the power to roll back power tariff hikes. The KERC decides the increase in tariff based on the cost of power purchase, T&D loss and the cost of running the ESCOMs. The KERC followed the process and instituted the hikes but before that the KERC conducts hearings, there was no objection from the Bommai government then. Now if the incumbent government wants to reduce the prices it has to show that power purchase prices, T& D loss and cost of running ESCOMs have reduced since the last power hike. This is not true and will not be accepted by the KERC. The determination of power prices by regulatory commissions is due to a parliamentary bill passed by the Vajpayee government in 2003. That bill is called the Electricity Act 2003 and the power of the KERC to determine power bills is according to section 62 of the Electricity Act.

The Congress leaders only way was contesting from a 'safe ' constituency after being booted out of their home . An example set by their great leader. To win votes, it was freebies that Karnataka never heard before. The rural people fell for it . A quick math was done on how much to increase in order to pay 200 units fee per meter. After victory, they have come up with conditions and blame the BJP for the increase .If they are so concerned why cannot they roll it back?. They have removed chapters from text books, projects on hold, revised rules or stopped literally everything. Nothing is free in the world. The voters have been taken from the right side, without oil.

state govt fooled every one except 2 district people. they are giving u peanut and taking apple from your fridge. some people are happy because they cant oppose congress... by heart no one is happy even the core supporter of congress. if Congress is blaming BJP for price rise in petrol gas, why they are not accepting blame on power tariff hike? and showing finger towards authority? or they think there is no authority for petrol and gas? also why they blamed BJP when power tariff was hiked if its by Authority? further if they can cancel development project started by BJP, why they cant cancel power hike if its by BJP? why CM gave statement that, there is procedure to increase power tariff every year from April to July. is this only while Congress is in power or in BJP rule also??? burden of minimum Rs. 48000 transferred to each family for benefit of Rs. 25920. also awaiting further burden in Budget session, they will increase building material, stamp duty on property purchase, increase vehicle registration fees cess on fuel, and many things as direct burden to people.

due to recent freeby around 72,000 crore burden to state govt wich will be taken as loan from world bank. if u convert 72,000 crore to 1.5 crore family, burden will be around 48,000 Rs to each family. Now benifit to each family 1. Rs 2000 per family - 24000 per year after many hurdle with documentation 2. Free electricity average 100 Unit (200 is maximum) * 5 Rs = 500 per month and 6000 per year but this benifit is vanished by recent power tariff hike, so not real benefit to any one. 3. 10 Kg free rice - Central govt is already giving 5 Kg Free rice and state govt will increase 5 kg at rate of Rs 32 per KG (as per minister statement) 32 Rs per KG * 5 Kg=160 Rs per month =1920 Rs for year actual benifit too each family is 24000 Rs +1920Rs =25920 Rs per year against 48,000 Rs burden, Do we need such freeby? every family will not travel in kSRTC every day, it may benifit to some people only but the Rs. 48000 Burden is for every one. further burden is People has to spend money to apply these schemes, private sector specially travel will face huge loss and industry will vanish from State.

Without corruption -- T & D losses -- bank write offs - -- mis use of power( PUN not intended ) -- power thefts -- the cost of one unit of power is Rs 3/ - maximum - with some margins -- there are various calculations how this is arrived -- even with 20 % profit it is around Rs 3,60 per unit -- but now 100 % burden -- Rs 7 / and above -- ----This is because of neo liberalism -- private sector take over -- Profits go to companies -- ---but losses are shared by public -- bank writeoffs -------- Starting has been adoption -- of --Reaganomics and Thatcherism --- world getting more and more divided in wealth -- -- Rich getting richer -- poor getting poorer ----- common man does not know what is happening -- but firefighting on day to day basis -- to balance budgets of house holds --

Instead of blaming each other atleast reduce 50% of the hike as already hiked previous year and look for alternate cheaper energy sources or control losses. Western countries are looking into smaller nuclear plants that can be easily designed and deployed in months than years, instead of economy not sustaining green energy sources and to avoid business / consumers suffer due to power shortages.

BJP or CONGRESS??? if Congress promised FREE electricity and won the election it is their DUTY to give free whatever the cost is, whoever increased or decreased the fare rather than blaming BJP who did a poor job and already lost peoples faith in Karnataka, Congress is in POWER and they can use that POWER to reverse any orders if they really want to help people and give free electricity, its a pity that people like you are becoming fools blinded by politics, god bless you and mind you this is just the beginning see how the prices of petrol, diesel and other essential will go up year by year to take the burden of freebies., Btw already stated excuses on free 10KG rice..panga naaaama for all the voters. This is what exactly BJP wanted if it loses power to rule.... It was planned for a perfect timing so that it's going to be a nungalarda tutthoo for Congress. Reverse the unfair rise in tariff and hold all transmission companies to tighten their belts by avoiding wasteful expenditure and commissions from contractors. These are the most corrupt agencies and at the end only consumer suffers. Secondly, all free agricultural pumps connections to be regulated with a free usage limits to avoid wasting of water and electricity.

BJP increased electricity bills effective April 2023 without any development done in the state and without any freebies, schemes and benefits. So, what is the expense for BJP except hoarding money for self and operation Kamala besides 40% cut. BJP has clearly stated that development is not important but communal issue is more important. Whereas congress has restarted all developments which BJP had stopped and top of that all freebies and benefits to people. People have positively responded to BJP’s zero development work and showed them the door rejecting BJP and RSS idealogy, Hindutva and communal fake narrative.
