Mangalore, Jul 22: A primary school in Nagori, ‘Hindu Higher Primary School’, which has existed since 90 years lost almost all its pupils over this summer holidays and just 30 students remain in classes from 1 to 7, with worried parents opting to send them to alternative schools in Capitanio and Balmatta among leading the school to closure. This school is located in the midst of green landscape near Nagori.

The government order deems that schools which have less than 100 students, be closed. This ‘two teacher’ school continued to function as teacher Sushila with her 34 years of teaching service in the school did not want to close this school as at least 30 students study here and she had an emotional bond with this ‘poor’ school. Speaking to Daijiworld, she said that with the help of donors all programmes like ‘Prathibha Karanji’, and school day celebrations were conducted though this school was lacking basic facilities. Now, she has applied for VRS and will be relieved from service at the end of this month.

She recalls that at one time, there were about 16 teachers in this school and after they retired no new teachers were recruited. In 2006, there were at least 150 children studying here. With the school building being ruined every year, no repair was done. With the number of pupils going below 100, the concerned officers sent a memo saying that the school cannot be continued.

This private school was looked after by one Vidyasagar, under Gayathri Venkatesha Vidyavardhaka Sangha. With the students’ number going down, the school building was rented out to a family from Surathkal last month. When asked the reason for letting out the school building for rent, Vidyasagar said that most of the school documents are still inside the school. “If a watchman is employed, he has to be paid a salary, and instead this family was given shelter”, he said.

With this move, people in the area are disappointed that their dear school which existed since 90 years has no future.

When I was doing my MBA, we had one case study about dairy product Amul Company. This is a Govt. entity and supposed to be closed down. But one officer named Mr. Cherian took over and requested the Govt. not to close it and asked for time which govt. obliged, as good sense prevailed with Govt. authorities.

Mr. Cherian ran this insolvent Company into profit making organization.

What required here is selfless, honest, vision oriented personality to run this school and govt. approval to start again.

If proper campaign is done, definitely the school can run again. If there is a will, there is a way. If we accept this as our community issue, then definitely this school can run.

Does any one knows why the student count ped drastically over the summer vacation?? Isnt that the reason why the school is on the brink of closure??

If its the quality of education, then why doesnt the Govt Do something about it. Off course we want our children to learn the state language , however English has taken over as the medium across all level of our lives and has to be a requirement in education.

By the way, isnt BJP ruling the state now??

Raje, If the school fees and health services were for business we would have been like the Reliance and other Pvt. schools like Pillai Intl. and minted money sameway for health services also. jsut compare the other pvt. schools which have only rich students and the christian schools which have more of poor, middle class students. It is high time you as community start schools for the poor and middle class students also and ofcourse health services, better orphanages, old age homes, etc....

When our churches were attacked, nobody and anybody those who have taken benefits of our education, health and social facilities come to our aid. so it is high time they as a community realise their responsibility and take up challenges. It is because of the "Chalta haI" attitude of common people that politicians take advantage and openly say that even thousands Anna Hazares cannot change the system. This is bitter truth, which we have to accept. Remember out of 100% may be only 15-20% people are corrupt but they are bossing over us. People need to be more vigilant and proactive, the attitude today is that if someone is in need people just ignore, people as a community should work for the betterment of society and ensure that atleast basic needs of people like food, shelter, education, health is taken care of. Change is difficult but not impossible.

Even this school should be handed over to some Dharmastala and seen by the community members that it is functioning. Also, there are many orphanage where the living conditions of children is pathetic. These children are helpless and cannot seek justice because they are small. The community needs to address this issue also.

I am really surprised to read the comments by varios section of people. The main subject of school closing down is set aside, religion has come to focus. It is true that corruption is killing the country but it is also true that bringing too much of religion in to every subject is blocking the progress of nation. I would request Daiji not to promote comments on religion and refrain from publishing such comments.

    @Nagesh, Bangalore.
Please accept my sympathies but making CORRUPTION LEGAL is not the solution.
BJP was a good party under Mr. Vajpayee but now all ROGUES have corroded this party.
Now that BJP stands exposed don’t brand all parties as corrupt and use that as an excuse for BJP’s folly.
Regarding CONVERSIONS you need to check with RSS, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and AMMA.
    @Rajesh, Mangalore.
Your statement that all Governments have looted temples across India is not true.
Kindly google “Temple frauds at Tirupati” / Shabarimal / Puttaparthi / Padmanabhaswamy………..
These temples have wealth in BILLIONS and if used judiciously no child in India will ever be deprived of basic education or sleep on an empty stomach.

    Nagesh Nayak,
Church funds used in School education as well and that is why these schools, colleges are running and providing good education. Dont forget you too studid in these christian Institutions. The above school is suffering due lack of funds and Less interest in Hindu Education as parents prefer English medium so that they can comment in this column in English.

The school I have studied too have now handful of students and now from last year converted in to English Medium school which is attracting more students. As one of the reader rights now a days families are small with 1 or 2 kids and hence want to provide Quality education.

Corruption can be reduced to minimum level, but cannot be stopped, specially developing world countries like Bharat/India. Church funds did help in education from years so that we are in better position today Nayak. Its time to Grow up going beyond religion.

In olden days, every family used to have 5 to 10 children. But since 1977 after emergency, it has been limited to 1 or 2 kids in a family. Nowadays schools are more but not enough children to complete quota of 100children/school. Parents like to send their kids to English Medium or convent school. Govt schools are running short of children despite good education, better facilitys nowadays. Bisiyuta, Free Cycles are not able to have more impact.

There is inferiority complex going on in children when ever some one ask them about their schooling. Govt. New Policy of Bagwad Geetha may not be liked by children, bcz nowdays parents have to force the children to make prayers at house. TV & Computers have taken Gods place in every house.

Dear Mr. Nagesh Nayak, 90 years old school was running and no problem so far and now when bjp rules the state this school as well as many other schools is closed because people are not studying in those schools? If the bjp and its associates had some sense they would have looked after this school especially Nagori, ‘HINDU HIGHER PRIMARY SCHOOL’.

If any Christians touch this school it will be like Mr. Lancy D'souza and Mr. Jillu's forcible conversion labels case will be attached.

Therefore kindly direct your comment to BJP & its associates plus your pranaam Yeddyurappaji to accomplish this job since he is generous in sanctioning money to temples but why reluctant to sanction money to NAGORI, ‘HINDU HIGHER PRIMARY SCHOOL’?

In my opinion this Education minister should be given education and should be charged with community service with non-Hindus.

All the Kannada medium schools in Karnataka and other religion language schools in India should change the medium of languages according to the need of the day. The region Govt Schools all over India should adopt teaching of the regional language as medium of instruction only up to fourth standard then switch the medium of instruction to English and make the regional language as second language and Hindi as third language and from eighth standard onwards, a foreign language as fourth language. The students of rural schools will transform in their attitude and will be ready to face the challenge of English Medium college education. Such changes will revive many schools from closure due to lack of students for new admission.

Very sad.Vinasha Kaale Vipareetha buddhi.Under the present globalization trend many Kannada schools have been either closed already or on the verge of closure.Yes English is required in MNC,it does not mean that we have to completely ditch the Kannada schools, which are the only source/blessings in disguise for the poor/middle class people.B'coz they can not afford or compete with affluent people who are very much capable and least bother about others.Request the concerned authorities/departments to look in to the matter and address the issue amicably in favour of poor and middle class people and modify the educational trend/policies/norms so as to help in favor of the less fortunate.Let them also see the bright light of the universe.Let their hopes also have some scope/meaning.Don't ignore them in the name of modernization.Pity for 90 years old school is being closed down.

Honest officers are unable to discharge their duty in the current political situation. Politicians are engaged in their own wranglings. Both the staffs of this school may be in advance age. Some Organisation,Trust,or Group of individuals should come forward to run the school.I suspect ,as the prices of land are going up, this piece of land could have gone into the hands of some builders. Government should enact laws like (1)The Land belonging to any educational Institution can be used for Schools, Colleges purpose only and they cannot be used/converted as residential/commercial (incl. cultural/marriage halls)/industrial/agricultural /boarding purpose in future. This will ensure that these lands are reserved for Educational purposes only. (2) Adequate Teachers recruited in all institutions. (3) Admit all working/begging/Supportless children in such schools. (4) Willing and able Old students of that school can be enrolled as trustees to run that school along with Interested people of that area to run that school.

Mr Nagesh, Just see the condition of the school, for once lets keep church, temple and mosque away.. and think we all pay Education tax including you.. where does that money goes??? Every time govt. keeps funds for education in budget where it is getting utilized.. we have a separate educational minister what is the use.. if the so called “educated” city like Mangalore it is so famous for its educational institutions, having a school like this then just think rural part of Karnataka or India how it will be… We taxpayers should debate where is our hard earned money that we pay through taxes is getting utilized? And not on temple and church.

Look at our ministers 1500 Crores they have looted I even don’t know how many zeros it will have, and see the ministers list BJP, Congress and JDS , it includes all the parties… don’t you think we are all fools we support them and fight with each other with our comments… they want the same thing divide and rule we will be busy fighting about religion color and they are enjoying with our money, by this report from Lokayukta it is clear now all there ministers are same.. back stabbing rats.. we should not fight with each other we should unite and fight against them. The only way to protect and continue Kannada Medium Schools is by way of teaching Key subjects like Mathematics and Science should be taught through English including English language. Because to compete with English medium students in competative Exams like Engineering, Medical and Jobs in MNC Compancies requires good knoweledge of English in the present Globalised World. GOVT. and Education Department should realise this fact of present world.

This reason only parents prefer English Medium Schools for their children. If you try to give good English awareness teaching in the Kannada Medium Schools, definately we can save Kannada medium Schools. Otherwise, like the closure of this 90 years old Schools, other Schools aslo follow soon or little later.

Where is Kageri? He could have saved the school by means of building repair and appointing teachers. There is no point shouting save Kannada!! It can not happen by just talking and waving banners. Now the building and land is a golden opportunity for politicians in due cource!

VERY SAD. WHAT IS DOING THE OLD STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL. AT LEAST THEY CAN TRY TO MAKE SOME ARRANGEMENTS TO RUN THE SCHOOL WITH THE DONATION OR TO APPROACH THE CLUBS / ASSOCIATIONS TO LOOK IN TO. IF THIS IS DEAD THEN GOVT. WILL NOT TAKE ANY ACTION THEY ARE BUSY IN MAKING MONEY AND TOMMOROW THIS ALSO WILL GO TO MINISTERS PRPOERTY. SO MY REQUEST TO THE OLD STUDENTS TRY TO TAKE UP THE MATTER WITH CONCERNED AND KEEP LIVE.

Pity....Closure of a school while population still booming shows things have been mishandled by authorities to maintain level of education and needs.

This is not an isolated case. Many of the Kannada medium schools face similar problems. Parents want to send their children to English medium schools.
