Luka Modric signs one-year contract extension with Real Madrid

Madrid, Jun 26 (IANS): Luka Modric has signed a contract extension with Real Madrid until June 2024, the La Liga club announced on Monday.

The Croatia midfielder, whose contract was to expire at the end of the month, follows Toni Kroos, Dani Ceballos and Nacho Fernandez in extending their contracts with the club this summer.

"Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the player's contract, which sees him contracted to the club until 30 June 2024," the club said in a statement.

Modric joined Real Madrid in 2012 from Tottenham and since then he made 488 appearances and won 23 trophies, which include five Champions League, five Club World Cups, four European Super Cups, three LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey and four Spanish Super Cups.

The 37-year-old midfielder has won the ultimate individual awards during his career as a Real Madrid player, including the 2018 Ballon d'Or, the 2018 FIFA The Best Player of the Year Award, the 2017/18 UEFA Player of the Year Award, the 2017 Club World Cup Golden Ball.

This season he was part of the FIFA/FIFPro World XI for the sixth time in his career.

The Croatian international also won the Golden Ball at the World Cup in Russia (2018) and the Bronze Ball at the World Cup in Qatar (2022).

Real Madrid has already secured the notable acquisition of Jude Bellingham, the England international, from Borussia Dortmund this summer to add further competition for places in their midfield.
