Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jul 4: A hill, which was by the side of the main road of Manipal collapsed on Tuesday July 4.

The mud from the collapsed hillock fell onto the road. Incessant rains are lashing the district since yesterday. Orange alert is declared by the meteorological department.

Due to continuous rain the soil of hillock got soft and resulted in collapse. There are buildings on the hill, which has created panic.

10-15 years back, after Laxmindra Nagar, there were no buildings till the Manipal Circle except for the Bacchus Inn..... In the last 10-15 years, construction of building mushroomed on the left side of the road towards Manipal from Laxmindra Nagar..... Most of the buildings were unscientific constructions with the valley being filled with mud, rubble and construction debris and buildings constructed on top of it..... What happened near Premier Enclave building couple of years back is known to all..... Adding to it, the road in the area has been concretised, which hinders free flow of rain water into the ground..... It is a time bomb situation.

The greedy humans have spoiled the beauty of Manipal. The unscientific construction methods used in the buildings on top of the Manipal hills await a major disaster. These small landslides are possible trailers to the big one coming soon.

Monsoon arrived 10days back and we have maximum of 1 week of erratic rain. what will happen to all these structure if our old monsoon returns - 3 months of contininous rains ( May 22nd to end Augut) that is Besha , Karthel and Aaati of Tulu Calender ? Plus residing monsoon rain of Sona, Kanya and Bonthel ? none of these building will last . Our ancetors are better engineers - the Mud houses have lasted for more than 150years in some places.

Most of the high-rises buildings built on vertically cut hills and on loose soil (huge trenches filled up with mud) stand the chances of collapsing in the future, because the process of mudsliding/land sliding has intensified over the years as the soil becomes soggy and loosens; buyers of flats need to be extremely careful without going for the glitzy promotion campaigns of the greedy builders lest they lose their life time savings and put their life and belongings to jeopardy!! I remember an entire village near Pune collapsed in minutes without any warning because of similar type of constructions; yet people don't learn their lessons!!

This is not a good sign at all nor it is negligible... Tip of the iceberg like situation.. Unless addressed quickly there may be a major landslide there....

Buildings on top of this hill are at high risk of collapsing as there is no retainer wall built; administration should ask the residents of buildings close to the hill to vacate as a matter of precaution!!

All those wonder people who brought homes in Prestige/Regal towers etc, their apartments caving is only just a matter of time. Presently, each flat is worth Rs. 50 lacs....no new owner should buy....very very dangerous and remember, once the building goes, your money is finished. Neither builder, nor govt responsible.

Very true karen; I fully endorse your views! These buildings have been built on high risk hills with great potential for landslides without building precautionary concrete retainer walls! As you said, seeing the precarious positioning of these buildings, no buyers will come even at highly discounted price; investment should be written off!!

In 2018 rains, we saw the Big Cinemas building quake and part of the soil eroded. Also, there was heavy groundwater contamination for people of Indrali and Hayagreeva nagar, owing to these hills. The day is not far when Regal, prestige apartments will completely collapse in a landslide, just a matter of time. One would have hoped the DC would halt all three axle vehicles from zooming up that hill at top speed, but no. Even that is being allowed...don't buy and tell others also not to buy. Better to lose small rent, than all your hard earned money.

Why panic now....it was bound to happen...more of these will happen in coming days. When you destroy the Nature, it takes its own time to respond with disasters. In the name of development entire coastal region has been destroyed by a few with limitless greed.

Man made disaster/s! Tempering with nature for developments has its own drawbacks unless proper safety rules are applied.

No building like this should have received OC, in the first place. Where is there place for the fire truck to enter the compound? The ZP/DC should face Lok Ayukta when something happens.......they risked lives and money of the residents.

Nowadays you cannot blindly depend even on OC as the builder cartels are hand ✋ in glove with the authorities; buyers should do their own research before investing their life time savings! Tomorrow if something happens everybody will wash their hands off, and the buyer will have to bear the entire brunt!!
